Anna was the cherished mother of Sonia (Steve), Mirella, and Marco (Shelly), and will be forever missed by her grandchildren Jordan, Lauren, and Emily. She is also survived by her loving siblings Maria (Paolo), Antonio (Maria), and Rita, and a multitude of nieces and nephews that she adored.
Our mother Anna came to Toronto as a young new mom in the mid 60s, bringing her infant daughter Sonia, and a brave hope for a better life. She left behind a large, close-knit family and many dear friends to begin again with her husband, Rocco, who had come to settle in Toronto, Canada the year before. They settled in a Toronto neighbourhood filled with Italian immigrants,
which helped her feel at home as she learned the rhythms of a new community and a new country.
It wasn’t always easy, but she found her footing with the tremendous support of friends and family who had come before our parents.
She was a doting mom, and she made sure we stepped out into the world looking our best. She would say, “It didn’t matter if you didn’t have any money, you always had to look your best,” and we did. With pride, she loved to tell us how often people complimented our family. Those
memories brought her such joy and still bring us smiles to this day.
Through the years, she built strong connections with family and with friends. She was happiest when she was talking with them on the telephone. Our phone line was busy more often than not.
She loved her husband Rocco “Rocchino” and together they made a wonderful team. Dad was outgoing, and while Mom was shy and quiet at first, she would warm to the dinners and company they shared. Afterward, they would go for a passeggiata to visit close friends and
family. Those were the best nights; full of energy, singing, homemade vino, and incredible food.
Mom loved her flowers, which was the best looking in her neighbourhood with many people praising them as people walked by as she tended to her garden in the Spring and Summer, while our Dad tended to the vegetable gardens. Growing good food at home was both a hobby and filled with pride. Seeing them share so much together, laugh, travel and the regular day to day was comforting. Mom would often reflect later, she was very fortunate to have Dad.
Mom missed our Dad deeply after his passing, and while it is incredibly sad not to have her here with us, we take comfort in believing they are together again in Heaven catching up, with Dad showing her around, and looking after his Anna. There is no doubt he was waiting for her with open arms for a big hug and kiss and said, “Anna what took you so long? I missed you, let’s go for a passeggiata. Everyone is waiting to see you!”
