BIOGRAPHY
May 27, 1930 - August 8, 2013
Born and raised in Sao Jose, Sao Miguel Ponta Delgada Azores, daughter of deceased Armenio Agusto Batista and Marianna De Sousa Batista. Siblings sister and deceased brother Ione Nidia Batista Almeida and Adroaldo Liberto De Sousa Batista. Armenia grew up learning to be domestic with all the daily chores girls did in those days helping their mother in the home, in order to become a good house wife, being crafty and creative, making riches out of rags. She also learned to crochet and knit and when she became better at it she would spend her time in making crocheted gloves, and sets of furniture covers and table cloths for a living, and to earn some extra money to help with expenses.
Met the love of her life at a very early age of 16 years old, deceased Dec 21, 2008 Joao Pereira Jacome Jr. They were joined in holy matrimony on October 23, 1954 in the Church of Sao Jose amongst family and friends. After awhile moved to Terceira for job opportunity for Joao who worked in the city buses as Armenia stayed home and minded the house, cooking and cleaning. This was a time of hard labor and very few rewards. On January 23. 1956 their daughter Armenia Maria De Sousa Jacome was born even though times were tough and sometimes money was not enough for their daily needs they still managed to make ends meet and they were happy. After nine months of struggling they decided to go back to Sao Miguel and Joao took a new job on the boat docs for the government at least he had a steady job.
On October 25, 1958 their son Joao Manuel Batista Jacome was born. They now had two children and therefore the worries doubled, but Armenia always put to practice all that she learned growing up. She could always make something new out of something old. As well no matter how hard and though life was she always had a smile on her face. A great smile and a wonderful since of humor. She always made good friends because she was of great character.
May of 1960 she had another daughter Gracinha, who she always spoke of her that she was born to be an angel and not meant to be hers. At the age of 4 months she lost Gracinha to our Lord. She had recently lost her father and this was tough for her to deal with and then a daughter. Never the less years went by and she continued doing what she knew to do best looking after her family and being a great wife to Joao.
Finally Feb 11, of 1966 the family migrated to Canada, she was 35 and Joao 36. They went to live in Hamilton where her sister-in -law and brother- in- law Judite and David Carreiro lived. Life now was not any easier, now she had to go out to work as her husband did because moving to Canada this was to be a new life full of hopes and dreams. But instead she walked in the street with snow up to her knees in which she had never dealt with before. She had never worked outside of the house and this was all new to her and at times very frustrating to deal with. But she still always had that great smile of hers and never complained. After having a few different jobs she landed a job in a poultry factory for 12 years and thank God the factory moved and jobs were terminated, and at the of 47 she decided she would not work anymore. Joao agreed she should stay home and mind the house and the kids.
In between her years of work she had her last son Charles Palms Jacome on April 7, 1968. It was not easy to go out to work and bring up kids and still keep up with her regular duties as a wife and mother. Finally when she did not work she enjoyed being at home and keeping herself busy with cooking and cleaning. Picked up different hobbies to occupy her time by making canned peaches from the yard and different seasonal jams.
After her kids moved on and her daughter Armenia got married and moved to Toronto. Both Armenia and Joao decided to sell their home and also move to Toronto closer to her daughter and look after the grandchildren Marcel, Victoria and Austin right up to adult teenagers. These were wonderful years for her and Joao, they were like second parents to their grandchildren and it always kept busy enough, and they were enjoying life the way they were never able to with their own kids. Their son John also had three children Alex, Angie and Phillip living in Barrie Ontario in many times was the highlight of their days to plan a trip to Barrie to visit their son and grandchildren where they could all play together and enjoy the day. They had a trailer in Muskoka near Midland, for many years and in the summer they use to take the kids for days and sometimes a whole week, at times they had all the grandchildren and the boys would camp out in tents while the girls slept in the trailer with the grandparents. Dad loved to cook and he would always make a feast for all of them. At night they loved to sit by the fire and enjoy each others company and tell stories. Mom never really liked the idea of the trailer and always argued or found reasons for not going but once she got there she never wanted to go home. She would always enjoy sitting on the porch watching the chip monks and a couple of times, by surprise chip monk would land on her shoulder or her lap. With all her complaints of not wanting to go North she always enjoyed and loved being outdoors then.
She had some rough years with her health since she was 63 years of age being diabetic and getting COPD (chronic lung disease) in which we almost lost her at that time but she was a fighter and survivor. Over the years she had some close calls but she always pulled through. When Dad passed away on Dec 21, 2008 this was a very devastating time for her and all of us but we managed to pull through, and with the loss of her husband after 54 years of marriage it was very hard on her but she never complained. Since her sickness with her COPD she was very dependent on Dad he did everything for her and more. She came to live with me and my family, these were wonderful years and great memories that we will always treasure, I would never have it any other way. We cared for her the best way we could at times it was not easy but I made a promise to my Dad and I had to keep it. Right to her very end at times it was not easy, and she was suffering a lot with all her health complications as much as she wanted to live on. It was her time to go and all her sufferings are over and no more pain, she always tried very hard but she could no more.
Mom was full of life and a very happy person and always had that great big smile on her face that always made you feel welcome. She loved family gatherings and celebrations. When she turned 80 we had a small celebration at Casa Abril Restaurant in the company of her sister Ione and brother in-law Humberto with some friends her children and grandchildren. This was the high light of her life, she was the center of attention and you could see she was enjoying every second. But in the last few months she mostly frowned but she knew how she was feeling and she could not take any more pain.
