Growing up with my cousin, Barbara, I always knew her as a very easy-going and friendly personality who enjoyed life with few complaints.
Struck with her illness, I saw another side of her - a strong courageous adult who would not give up and would fight to the bitter end.  I learned of her compassion and desire to help others, especially young children suffering from autism.
She made a lasting contribution to the lives of many and will always be remembered in the hearts of my family.
Sincere condolences to Mike and family.  I know you will all treasure the precious time you were able to spend with such a special wife and mother.

My condolences to all the family.  I only met Barbara recently while visiting the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook, but it was long enough to know she was a very special person.

I am so blessed that I was able to share a chat with Barbara before Christmas at Sunnybrook.  At that time, we talked a lot about special needs children, including my son Mitchell (her third cousin) who has Autism-Aspergers, who just had an appointment next door at Bloorview that day.  As we spoke, Barbara was most concerned about the children that she was not able to be with and work with because of her illness.  I was very touched to see that a request was made for donations to the Autism Society.  It shows Barbara's compassion and thoughts of other's needs before her own. We are blessed with another special needs Angel in heaven to guide us. As the years passed, Barbara always greeted me as if she had just seen me yesterday, with joy in her face and her heart.  Being a small flower girl in a purple dress at Barb and Mike's wedding is actually my most vivid, early childhood memory.
