What a pleasure to read all the beautiful testimonies of a GREAT woman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her extended families.  A simple and contented woman with the sweetest smile and a soft gentle voice to all who knows her.  I will always remember her beautiful, smiling face whenever I came to visit Teresa & family.  Her first thought and greetings to me were an invitation to stay and eat.  What a joy and privilege to enjoy such a sumptious and delicious meal!

To all the immediate and extended families of Grandma Ning - you are all so blessed to have such a wonderful legacy of a great and wonderful woman.  May the blessings of Grandma Ning flow to all the generations beyond her.  Her strength, resilience, endurance, perseverance, kindness and love to you all will be forever remembered and the best gift of all, she had accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour and she is now with Him in heaven.

Growing up, family gatherings were always held at GoungGoung and PohPoh's house and BakBak would always be sitting on the stairs, smiling intently at members of her large family passing by. 

I was her first great granddaughter and she has known me my whole life. I regret being selfish and only wanting to spend time with my cousins, even though she was always present in the same house. Even though my Chinese wasn't the greatest, I could have taken the time to give a simple "how are you" because at least I could have managed to say those few words in Chinese.

I will remember BakBak's wonderful cooking as she always made sure that none of her great grandchildren were in her presence with an empty stomach. She had a strong, caring heart and certainly lived her life to the fullest - all 103 years. 

BakBak, it gives me great joy to know that you accepted Christ and got baptised a few years ago. I know that you are in a happier place. Even though I will miss you, I am glad that you are relieved from any pain that you had to endure here on earth.

As a child, I often heard of how little GoungGoung and PohPoh had (in terms of possessions) when they first immigrated to Canada; the struggle of raising a family in Hong Kong, and the difficult decision it was to move them all to a foreign country for a chance at higher education.  I know they couldn't have done it without you.

Even as your first great-grandson, all of this happened before I was born.  Though I was absent from the transition, I am incredibly humbled by the fact that the benefits I experience today in my life and in my family originate from the tremendous dedication that you had for us--down to the fourth generation.

You were such a disciplined and independent woman, even at the age of 90 I would see you walk up and down the stairs at GoungGoung's place in Scarborough to do the laundry.  Even with all of us great-grandchildren creating a ruckus around the house, I never heard you once complain.  But when we had all but exhausted ourselves with cartwheels and wrestling on the basement carpet, you would not hesitate to remind us of the chinese soup ("tong") that awaited us upstairs on the kitchen table.

Oh, and the food you and "PohPoh" would prepare around Chinese New Year!  

I remember the stories you would  recollect at the dinner table (over a plate of your favourite dish of steamed fish, of course) and how you never lamented leaving all you had known for the sake of your family.

I know now that you must never have considered yourself poor; even as your health began to fail, you always had so much to give.  BakBak, I just want to let you know that today, our family is that much richer because of you.

Rarely throughout my childhood would I see my great grandmother not performing some household chore or providing us kids with a sweet treat. The years hardly seemed to have any effect on her - whereas most great grandmothers are incapable of even coherent thought, mine held on to her ability to take care of herself and others.

More than her timelessness, however, I remember her love, for she was the very embodiment of selflessness. I did not have the privilege of knowing her in her prime, but even in the short time that I did have to enjoy her company her immense propensity for unconditional love shone through.

Though I will miss my great grandmother, I am glad that she no longer has to endure the suffering that plagued her during the latter years of her life. I hope she is in a happier place now.

It is hard to believe that I have known "Ah Ning" for more than 30 years.

Her welcoming smile eased much of my anxiety when I first visited my girlfriend's (now wife's) family at 12 1/2 Melbourne Ave.  Since then, she has always called me by my first name "Chung Chow" and that made me feel very special and personal.

I enjoyed visiting Joanna's family, maybe partly because of the delicious home- made dishes that were prepared everytime.  The dumpling receipe of my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law was legendary and could never be duplicated anywhere else.

Family is everything to her.  She would spend her spare time looking at pictures of family and was happily surrounded by family photos in her room. God granted her wishes as she was surrounded by all her grandchildren in the hospital just the Sunday before.

I am glad that she accepted Christ in 2002 and was baptized in Yee Hong. The courage that she has shown in taking this big step demonstrated her strength and willingness to receive God's grace. Rest in peace till we meet again in heaven.

I had grandparents who cared for me, parents who spoil me, a brother and many cousins to share laughter with, aunts and uncles who guide me, and most of all a great grandmother who’s been there for all of us since the day we were born. She’s a strong woman. She raised her son by herself through thick and thin. She took care of her six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren including me.

  I am her sixth great grandchild. She was there since the day I was born and she took care of me and loved me. I never spent that much time with her because I was always too busy with my cousins or at school. No matter what I was doing, I knew she was there. We would be playing hide and seek downstairs together and she would be there sitting on her leather chair upstairs near the kitchen table. When I went upstairs to grab a drink, I would always run into her. She would look at my flushed face and sweaty clothes and smile at me. She would always say to me, “Be careful Tin Lai “ I can still vividly hear her voice today. She used to tell me how smart I would be one day and how beautiful I would grow up to be. I can still hear those words and see her smile when she looked at me in the eyes. I miss you Bak Bak.

  This summer, I had planned on volunteering at Yee Hong so that I have an opportunity to take care of her. I regret now that I haven’t started earlier so I could have spent more time with her. I should have talked to her more when I had the chance to but I lost it. I’m sorry. I promise you Bak Bak I will study hard and be that great granddaughter you said I would be. I promise I’ll work hard and treasure those around me. One day, I’ll see you again in Heaven and you can say those same words to me again. I know you haven’t left me; you’ve just become my guardian angel. I will never forget you and I love you forever.

I still remember her going to the market two times a day to shop for the fresh food for the whole family when we lived in Hong Kong. She always prepared the best and most delicious meals for us. Whenever there would be a festival or special occasion, she would prepare a feast and the best traditional Chinese food for us. Now that I have children of my own and know how much it takes to prepare all these for the family, I appreciate her work even more.

She was a role model and idol. Although she had not gone through very high education, she always wanted to learn and to upgrade herself. She would read at her leisure. She could write well in Chinese and was also able to read newspapers and magazines without any difficulty, which would be uncommon for a woman in her generation. She immigrated to Canada at the age of 70. Whenever possible, she would ask her grandchildren to teach her how to read or write alphabets and simple English words. She was not afraid to answer the phone with her broken English. She even signed her name in English. She always encouraged the six of us to pursue higher education. She kept reminding us that the knowledge we attained could not be taken by anyone. I find this statement very true. With her inspiration and dedication, I have successfully completed my professional designation today.

She had a strong will. She had been a widow for a long time and no matter what kind of situation she was in, she was able to stand strong. 

She was affectionate just like a mother to us. She was a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother. She never displayed her solemn side.  She always welcomed everyone including our friends. 

She was very skillful. She was able to fix any daily gadgets. She could sew her own clothes by hand. The top that she would wear in the funeral was sewn stitch by stitch with her own hands. 

 “Ah Ning”, I am so grateful to have you in my life. You may think that you have done nothing big for the family but indeed you have contributed so much for each and everyone one of us. You have worked so hard and dedicated all your life to serve the whole family. You can now rest in peace with God. I will see you in Heaven someday. I love you so much and you will always be in my heart.

My grandmother (Ning) is very special to me.  She is very close to me and is like my mom.  Since both my parents had to work to feed the six children (look at how big we are today), she was taking care of all of us, our household, and even taking care of my parents sometimes.  She has a very strong will and strength and maybe that is why she lived until the old age of 103.

I remember she always got up early each morning like (around?) 6 am, and started cooking breakfast for all of us.  Our breakfast would be rice and dishes.  We went home for our lunches, which were again freshly cooked rice and dishes.  Of course, dinner was rice and dishes as well.  She just did not stop working and getting things ready for us.

My very vivid memory of how my grandmom took care of me was when I was in Hong Kong and I had some kind of kidney problem; I remember she took me to a medical clinic for needles everyday for about a month.  I also remember when I had some sort of small pox (not sure) and fever, she carried me on her back and walked a long distance to a medical “specialist” to check me out.  She certainly cared a lot about me.

I was so excited when my grandmother accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour in 2002 and was baptized in the Yee Hong nursing home.  I know I will see her in heaven again and that is the most important thing to me.

My dear families and friends, I want to see all of you in heaven.  I want to share with you this Bible verse:

I am paying my highest respect to my grandmother-in-law Boon Ho Wong (nake name Ah-Ning) here and I am relieved that me and my wife Teresa (Wong's eldest grandchild) could see her on your last night. 
In her last 2 weeks she had been in & out hospital 2 times and finally she was settled in a very nice and comfortable room at Scarborough Grace Hospital where she spent her last night and rested peacefully. In less than 10 hours before she rested we saw her lying comfortbly on the bed and she seemed to know her family was with her, we talked to her and she responsed. I am very sure she knew we were with her. Before we left Teresa even prayed for her and asking for God's mercy and blessing on her.

After I moved to Canada I lived with my grandmother-in-law "Ah Ning" for a year and I fully understand what type of person she is. She is an elder who loves and  cares her grandchildren very much. She has to make sure we are okay with everything particularly we eat well. I remember she always makes us breakfast before we leave home for work or school. Though she's an elder and raised in China  she is good at making egg salad and  fried egg sandwich for our lunch. She also cooks rice with steamed ribs for our breakfast sometimes to ensure we have engergy to start our day. Another thing she makes us all satisfied is whenever we are hungry she loves to cook us "Kung Tsai Mean", the Japanese instant noodle wth an fried egg and some vegies, this is the best meal we always had.
For me, I particulary like to talk to elder people so that I have a lot of topics with Ah Ning, she loves to tell me about her life and "Heung Ha" (hometown in China) and I am her good audience because I grown up  with my own grandparents who came from the same "Heung Ha" (hometown in China) in HK,  they also liked to tell me the same things. Ah Ning treated me like her own grandchild and I also treated her like my own grandmother too.

I feel proud for my parents-in-law, my wife and my brother/sisters-in-law to have such a good and wonderful mother, mother-in-law and grandmother who dedicated her life to love, care and support her familiy.

Dear Grand-Ma,

You have been wonderful in the lives of your grandchildren and great grandchildren. Your love and care have touched each of us and have shaped us into what we are today. Living a life that spans a whole century is amazing and is worthy of celebration. Living through the hard days of early China, the tumultuous war years, and then the challenging times as an immigrant in a foreign land called Canada; these are all examples of perseverance that we will never forget… if only I could hear all your stories and be wiser because of them… I know one day I will.

My grandmother was a family oriented person and she was the greatest.  She devoted her life to the family and never complained.  She was very bright,smart and knowledgeable.  When she had a chance, she read the newspaper to update herself.  She was a very cheerful and friendly person; she always made people feel welcome to the family.  She knew how to take care of herself and the family.

When my parents were working, she looked after the family of 6 kids, e.g. grocery shopping; sent us to school; prepared meals; taught us how to read and write.

Grandma, you are always in our hearts and our family!!!  We miss you.

Dear Ah Ning,

You are special to me not only because of your love for me, but for being a woman of insight.  You were proud to be able to read and write when most women of your time were not.  You believed that beauty comes from within and not by binding one’s feet.  You had taught us to value education like you had and strived to be the best that we could be.  You were so proud of every small accomplishment that we made and somehow forgave the heartaches that we gave you.

I am sure you still remember the time when I was 4 years old, I purposely closed the apartment elevator door before you, so you would worry if I made it down safely or not.  What about the time when I climbed over our 13th floor balcony like some superhero so to see what our house looked like from the outside in… I am sure I nearly gave you a heart attack.  Of course you set me straight and I am forever thankful for that.

I will remember your words of wisdom and your example of hard work. I will miss you… but in the mean time, I will treasure all the fond memories that I have of you. Goodbye for now, but in the fullness of time, I know I will see you in heaven one day.

My dear grandmother,

It is with great sadness that I am saying good-bye to you. Even though we are only separated physically, our lives will no longer be the same without you.

You are someone who I will always look up to. Your dedication to your family is unequivocal. You took care of our everyday needs which included going grocery shopping twice a day, always making sure we had the most nutritious home-cooked meals. You had to carry heavy loads of groceries up many flights of stairs and we would never hear you complain. I learned to love and take care of my children just like you - unconditionally.

Even though you didn't have the opportunity for higher education, the wisdom that you possessed surpassed many who claim to be wise. The advice that you gave us helped shaped us into whom we are today. We would not be the same without your guidance.

You were firm with your discipline because you knew what was best for us. I know it hurt you just the same when you disciplined us. You taught us right from wrong. You were proud of our accomplishments and yet you did not want us to boast. You taught us to be humble despite our successes. I learned modesty from you. 

You demonstrated your courage when you immigrated to Canada over 30 years ago. You left a familiar place that you called home because of us. Even though you didn't understand any English, you were willing to adapt to this new culture because of your love for us. You continued to take care of us after you arrived in Canada. I was inspired by your courage.

You were a smart lady. I remember you teaching us mathematics when we were young, in your own way. You always knew how to take care of yourself. I still remember one time when you asked me to write down the recipe for one of your favorite soups. You dictated every single ingredient with fine detail, included the individual quantity to the 'gram'. When I was lost for the Chinese word for that ingredient, you even wrote it down yourself. That soup recipe actually had more than 10 different ingredients. I am so proud of you, grandma.

You were a good cook too. Mom and you would always made us special treats
for different Chinese celebrations and we all loved the "sticky rice dumplings" around May and the special fried pastries around Chinese New Year. You would always serve your dishes with a smile and even clean up after cooking for us. We were spoiled. I think that is why we are spoiling our kids a bit too.

Despite your failing health, you continued to stay independent. You took care of yourself until just a few years ago because you didn't want to be a burden to others. I learned to stay strong despite adverse circumstances.

Dear grandmother, I might not have told you what I thought about you during your stay here, but I know you will read this letter. We will reunite one day in a much better place where there is no longer any sickness or unhappiness. Meanwhile, please take care of yourself. Take time to smell the roses, listen to the angels singing and keep smiling.

I love you and will miss your presence.

My great-grandmother is one of my role models. Even though I don't know her very well, she has still significantly impacted my life. I hear all these stories about how she came to Canada with my grandparents, my dad, and my aunts and helped to take care of the family, which required a lot of hard work and dedication. All through my fourteen years of life, she gave me a new meaning to the word "endurance". Up to the old age of 103, she never stopped staying strong; never stopped holding on. Although she'd been through so many hard times in her life, she never gave up, but kept going. What matters the most to me, however, is that my great-grandmother accepted Christ and was a believer when she passed away. My great-grandmother is someone I'll never truly forget and I'm looking forward to seeing her again in heaven.

“Bak Bak” was the best great grandmother ever. She always offered me food whenever I went to ”Gong Gong” “Po Po”'s house. She would always offer me food even when she saw that I just finished eating. She was always such a giving person. Thanks for everything “Bak Bak”!

My great grandmother was always a hardworking person. Despite all the times my grandparents told her to rest, she would always find something to do to help them out. She is amazing; God had blessed her to live a long, fulfilling life. She was able to live and see three generations: her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. I feel blessed for having her as my great grandmother, and I will never forget her love for me.

There are too many precious memories that I have of my Great-Grandma and I can't express them all. One special memory that stood out the most for me was when I was a little boy, I would go and visit "Goung Goung" and "Paw Paw"s house. My cousins and I would always play and run around the house. While running, I always caught a glimpse of Great-Grandma sitting on the stairs and smiling at us.  I am sure that you are still watching over us with a big smile from up above. I hope that there are still stairs for you to sit on!   Love You

I still remember when you asked me to write down your special "Recipe for Soup", dictating every ingredient in that recipe, including the specific quantity of each item. When I was lost for Chinese words for an ingredient, you even wrote it down yourself. I couldn't believe that the recipe contained more than 10 different ingredients and you remembered every single one of them. I am proud of you, grandma.

You were always proud of your grandchildren's accomplishments too. I can see the smile on your face when you found out how well we did in school. You gave us words of encouragement when things didn't go as well. You always made sure that we remained humble despite our successes. I learned modesty from you.

Despite your worsening health, you stayed independent for as long as you could. You demonstrated to us how one can stay strong despite adverse circumstances. I learned perseverance from you.

I might not have told you what I thought about you during your stay here but I know you will read my letter, I know you are in a better place now and someday we will reunite in heaven. My grandmother displayed an aura of quiet strength. She was the perfect example of love, discipline, hardwork and sacrifice. She moved to Canada in the 70's to help my parents raise me. She was extremely proud of her big family, particularly her son, 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Always giving and never expecting anything in return. It was a privilage and a blessing to have had her in my life.

"A Ning," I love you and miss you very much. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

I remembered a story of Grandma’s dedication and her kind heart when she picked up her life in Hong Kong and came to Canada.  Not knowing nor speaking the foreign language, she decided to answer the call for help and dedicate herself in caring and raising her grandchildren.  When she moved to Canada, she was 71 years old and pretty much lived all her life and affiliated herself in Hong Kong.
After hearing that story I would think to myself, after living in Toronto all of my life, would I so easily pick up, say good-bye to Toronto and move to a foreign country and call that country “my home?”
To me, you are the perfect example of devotion, dedication and hero.
“A Ning”, we know that you are up in heaven with God, not only have you had an impact in your family, but also my life.  We are all going to miss you!

One of my earliest memories is of walking down the stairs of Grandma and Grandpa's house holding onto Great-Grandma's finger. She was strong! She always took care of us, had treats for us, and gave us the beautiful smile captured in this wonderful picture.

Hi Dear "Yan Yan"
Although I had left Toronto for 20 years now, I still remember your smiles and kindness.  Everytime we came to your house, you always greeted us with big smiles, and invited us to stay for dinner or stay longer.  Since I mingled with Stanley, Alice and Jennifer more, I always think they are very blessed to have such a loving, sweet, and generous grandmom and wished I had one like you too.  It is good to know that you are now resting in God's everlasting arm, and we shall see your big smile in heaven again one day.

Respectful, never complain, and of course her welcoming smile always make me feel like home.

Yes. This is my memory of her.    My memory of my grand mother in law is all coming back.

It appears as if it just happened yesterday……………..  

It all began in 1988. An old but cheerful lady greeting me at the door busy welcoming me to her family.  
This is my first glimpse of her.  My broken Chinese (traditional dialect) probably sounded so alien to her, yet she would pretend she understood every word I said.  

Not only did she spend her whole life to raise her son and her grandchildren, many times she babysat her great grandchildren.    

Year after year she would prepare lots of traditional cakes for her grandchildren in the Chinese New Year, and year after year the grandchildren expected the same, until one year when she finally moved to a nursing home.  The world is less colorful.  The world is not the same.   This brave lady felt the loneliness yet she understood the need.  

I know she has now found peace in God but her spirit is always here with my family.
