Leaving us with heavy hearts, Bridget Mary Hill quietly passed away on October 9th. Bridget “Bridie” Hill was raised in Dublin, Ireland, one of ten children born to Francis and Bridget Harris. She was predeceased by her siblings William, Shamous, Pat, Frank, Mary, Tony, and Eileen. Bridget is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 66 years, Don, son Freeman, and her sisters Teresa Buchner (Peter), and Rosalyn.
We will all miss her very much. Bridget, a woman of spirited charm and independence, set sail for Canada at age 19 with her sister Pat, bravely seeking a new life. A few years later, her sisters Eileen and Teresa followed. It was in Halifax, at the Olympia Gardens Dance Hall, that Bridget met the love of her life, Don Hill.
They married and eventually settled in Toronto, where they built their life together, and Don began his 25 years driving for the Toronto Transit Commission. From a young age, Bridget displayed a remarkable gift for sewing, and enjoyed a long and accomplished career as a seamstress. Often singing as she worked, she created and altered many of her family’s clothes. An avid walker who took pride in her home, Bridget was also Don’s ‘Master of the Culinary Arts’.
Over the years, she and Don shared many adventures—road trips to New York City and across the U.S.A., travels through Europe, and memorable cruises to the Mediterranean and Alaska. After suffering a traumatic brain injury in 2021, Bridget faced each day with remarkable determination and grace. Recently, she was diagnosed with a serious heart condition, and her resilience continued. Throughout this time, she was surrounded by Don’s unwavering love and devotion, and the comforting support of her dear sister Teresa and friend Brenda.
Bridget’s warmth, humour, and indomitable Irish spirit will be missed by all who knew her, and her husband and best friend Don will forever treasure the life they shared. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
