This is my last entry for your book. We all miss you and talk about you every time we get together. We will be seeing each other on Uncle Frank's 100th birthday on Saturday July 27, 2013. I know it will be a time when we will all feel your absence.

Dear Diane,
I came down on Friday June 14th to bring you some birthday flowers. I hope you like them. I thought they were very festive. We all went to North Bay last weekend for Jeremy and Therese's wedding. Phyllis, Jeremy and Therese had your picture in their flowers so you could be a part of the wedding too. We all missed you and talked about you a lot. Hope you enjoyed looking in on us.

Dear Diane,
It's been a year now and I still think of you every day. So many people had such kind and funny memories of you. You really left your mark. You knew some very nice people, and all of them loved you. I still think of the times you and Phyllis and I went to the theatre. Every time I see the advertisement for the new Wizard of Oz, I wonder if you would have wanted to see it, even though it is playing at the wrong Theatre. I got a chance to spend some time with your good friend Tony. He misses you very much. Hugo and Sunny have settled in with Phyllis and Frank. Frank isn't doing well now and I wonder if you could put in a good word for him. If you see my little Samantha, please give her a hug and a kiss from me.  I hope you like the engraving we had done for you. They had never done a dove before but I think they did a good job. We may find that other families want to copy it, but you will always be the first to have it. I hope you are surrounded by peace and love. You are always in my thoughts. Love you - Doreen

I just learned this week of Diane's courageous battle and of her passing.  I was deeply saddened - I had the honor and privilege of working with Diane for the better part of 11 years and have will always been remember  her dignity and wicked sense of humor.  My sincere condolences to her family, friends and co-workers.  She will be missed.

Hello my dear Diane. It is now 3 months since you have left us. 
I wish that you were still with us, cancer free.  

You are not forgotten, your friends and family talk about you all the time. You will always be a big part of our lives, and my life in particular. In the last 3 months, together with our good friend Rob, we would have gone out to dinner a few times, one of these dinners would have been at Allen's backyard patio on the Danforth, a great place to enjoy a good meal during the summer. We would have seen a movie or two, possibly the Dark Knight Rises (you cannot beat Anne Hathaway in a Catwoman costume) and we would have attended the Comic-Con/Sci-fi convention. We would have talked about the Summer Olympics – the Queen parachuting with James Bond into the stadium – you would said that was undignified, I would have said that was great theatre. You would have loved that the Canadian women's soccer team won a bronze medal BUT were cheated out of a gold, I would have said that they were incredibly lucky to have won even the bronze medal – let the sparks begin! Oh how I miss those get togethers/dinners and discussions!

The world is a lesser place without you, my life is not as rich and full without you here……… my selfish side finally comes out.

I'be been out of touch with you for many years now, and I'm sorry I didn't find you to get in touch.

I'll always remember your pithy comments, your love of new and interesting classy beers, how hard you worked and your quiet determination.  You were a quiet force, and I'll miss you.

It's with sadness that I am learning of your passing today Diane. Although it has been awhile since we last shared a chat and a chuckle at a Winkfein family gathering, my thoughts are not far from you and your family, especially at this time.

Dear Diane,
It's June 14th, 2012, and it's your 56th birthday.  I wish I could send you Birthday Greetings in person, but that can't be anymore.  I think of you every day and miss spending time with you, and talking with you on the phone. Several times a day I think of where you would be and what you would be doing if you were still with us. I wish you were still here, cancer free. As this is not possible, I hope you are having the time of your life with Mom, Dad, Uncle Joe, Aunt Ann, Grannie and Grandpa, and everyone else who have gone before us.  I hope you are happy. Happy Birthday my dear Diane!  I know that you are checking up on us. I know that one of the things that we both admired about each other was a certain childlike quality that we each possessed. We could both laugh at the stupidest things.  You enjoyed coming down to the annual Sci-Fi/Comic Book Convention.  I'm not sure if you had more fun soaking up the surroundings or just watching me be a kid in a candy store.
 I wanted to tell the following story at your funeral mass, but I deferred since I thought that it might be somewhat inappropriate in a religious setting. One of my favourite comic book movies is still the first major one that was released – Superman I back in 1977. The scene that comes to mind is where Superman arrives too late to save Lois Lane from the after effects of an earthquake. Superman had been too busy saving and helping everyone else. Superman goes through the emotions of despair, sadness and finally anger.  He then decides that he will NOT accept the death of his friend, that with his super powers he can do something about Lois' death.  Superman flies up high into the atmosphere and even though his mind conjures up a vision of his father stating emphatically that he is not to use his powers to change earth's history, Superman defies his father's wishes and uses his super speed to cause the Earth to rotate backwards, thereby reversing the events that had just occurred and bringing Lois Lane back to life. Forgetting all the laws of physics and astronomy that this violated, this was a great scene, after all, what's the point of being a super being if you cannot save someone that you love.
I wish that I could duplicate what Superman did, I wish that I could turn back time, I wish that you were still here with us. I also know that these are just the childlike dreams of someone who has read too many comic books and watched too many sci-fi movies. As each day passes I am able to deal with your passing a little better, although I know that I will likely never be totally at peace with it.  I will always be thinking of you, especially on your birthday.  All my love all the time. Your friend Tony.

To Diane my baby sister Hey (Kid-O) You wanted to go for a walk when it warmed up.It wasnt as warm as you wanted but I held you close to keep you warm. It was my greatest Honor to take you on your last walk.. I miss your funny grins your sense of humour your lagh your voice your smile. But when I put that altogether. I realy miss you. Im glad you were my sister  Love you. You wanted to leave this planet But this planet is the one who loses the most. And hey you got your wish ( No More Fears)  Love Ron

Diane, you were an amazing, strong and inspiring woman with a wonderful heart of Gold. You will always hold a special place in my heart and we will always miss you.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news, and my deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the family. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all those whose lives she touched.

You always were our toastmaster at every family dinner with nothing but kind and inspiring words for everyone to enjoy.  Every holiday when we raise our glasses we will think of you.

The loss of a beautiful person with a kind heart and positive attitude makes this world that much sadder because of her absence.

Diane, though I knew you only for one summer, you had an unfailing ability to make the best of every thing and every day. Thank you for your kind words, and my deepest sympathies to your loved ones at this time.

I will truly miss Diane, as she always provided me with the support in both great and tough times. She demonstrated the unflinching resolve and the optimistic attitude that made her truly special. May God provide her with the same passion she shared with us.

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies. Our thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time. Diane was an amazing person - and will be missed around the curling rink.  Her smile and kindness will always be remembered.

Diane, thank you so much for being my friend... you let me cry on your shoulder more than once and always gave me the best advice! You know you were always special to me...
Truly an individual with so much character and intelligence... a wonderful, complicated, beautiful person! I will miss you...
