Don Kitchen, a long-time resident of Pickering, died at St. Michael’s Hospital, despite the wonderful effort the nurses and doctors on his medical team made to save Don’s life. His wife, June Hannah, Don’s children, Robert, Pamela, and stepson, Douglas, will always be grateful for their tender and extensive care. When Don moved his small family; wife Anne, and children to Pickering the town lacked most of the amenities that make the city the haven it is today. People travelled to Scarborough to shop for groceries and just about anything else needed. Don was appalled and served as President of the Ratepayers Association until he decided he could bring more of the amenities needed for a good family life by serving as a Councillor for Ward 2. He served his community for 16 years and was proud of the arenas, community center, Kinsman Park, as well as other green spaces they were to develop for the people of Pickering. Don, and other members of Council, then went in search for businesspeople to bring jobs and homes to Pickering and were savvy enough to ensure each project was properly funded and supplied funds for amenities such as libraries, senior housing and programs that gave enjoyment to the citizens of what became the City of Pickering. Don did not want a funeral so sometime mid-summer there will be a Celebration of Life where his wife June, children, son, Robert Kitchen (Joy) and their children, Jennifer, Michael (predeceased), Amanda, and granddaughter, Cassi and daughter, Pamela Hills (Mark), and their children, Suzanne Van Ooyen (Collin) and Brett Hills (Lauren) and grandchildren, Theo, Charles and Madison, and stepson, Douglas Hannah (Tina) who will be able to share memories of this wonderful man who gave so much of himself in an unselfish effort to make life a better and happy one for so many of us. We will always love and honor his memory.
