She began her formal education at age ten and was a lifelong student. After retirement from the Scarborough Public Utilities, she enrolled at the University of Toronto and graduated with a BA in English. As a young woman, she played the violin, viola and Hawaiian guitar in the People's Church orchestra and later in life played the viola with the North York Community Symphony Orchestra. Doris loved to host hymn sings in her home and to share her knowledge and love of the violin and viola with friends who wished to learn to play the instruments. She also wrote poetry and leaves her family with a collection of poems penned from childhood to recent years. All who knew Doris, knew of her kind heart and love for cats and animals in general-including a co-worker who joked that if she came back as anything, she wanted to come back as one of Doris's cats! Doris's main goal in life was to please her Lord Jesus Christ and throughout her life she used her musical and teaching talents in the Gospel Hall, The Peoples' Church, The Church of the Nazarene (Main Street and Kennedy Road) and Evangel Temple. She was a passionate supporter of Christian missions and throughout her life supported many financially and in prayer. At Shepherd Lodge she had many wonderful friends and their visits and prayers were a great source of inspiration and comfort to her when she became bedridden. She also was thankful for the ministry of the pastors from the Church in the Village and Peoples Church. Visitation will take place between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at The Church in the Village at Shepherd Lodge, 3760 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, ON.
