

Edna May "Iris" Smith (nee: Terroade) was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Edna will be remembered as an outstanding individual.
She was the daughter of Venetia and Josiah Smith. Edna grew up in Jamaica. She had one sibling, Everald.
As a young girl, Edna had a number of interests. Like most children, she enjoyed playing and making up games. She was curious about the world around her and was often eager to explore it. In her spare time she liked sewing dolls. However, to Edna, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with her friends.
A typical teenager, Edna had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Her favorite class in high school was Bible Study.
Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Edna enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. While growing up, Edna had a lot of friends but her family always came first. Later in life, she became friends with Agnes McClintock, David Thomas, and Adlin Wellington.
In September of 1936, Edna exchanged wedding vows with Percival Terroade in St. Mary, Jamaica. Empathic and loyal, Edna was committed to making her new family happy.
Edna worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Edna was blessed with six children: Gloria, Lloyd, Leonie, Delroy, Pauline and Kenneth. Another blessing for Edna was the gift of ten grandchildren: Faithley, Grace, Richard, Tonia, Cheryl, Koro, Hope, Dov, Michael and Alex.
Fortunately, Edna enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Edna worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Her primary occupation was as a child caregiver. She was employed for over 20 years, registered by the London, County Council in London, England. Edna found tremendous joy in taking care of children and her animals and especially her love of God and her church.
Edna enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were sewing and reading the Bible. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others.
Edna found pleasure in sports. Edna was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following Cricket events whenever she had the chance to do so.
Throughout her life, Edna was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Throughout her later years, Edna was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Edna was a truly spiritual person. She loved God all her life and lived her life to please God. Her faith was important to her. She would find enjoyment going door to door talking about God.
Edna was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. Some of her favorites were a little budgie she had for about 3 years, a cat named Tweenie she had for 14 years and Tilly the dog for 10 years. They were inseparable.
When Edna’s retirement finally arrived in 1982, she was well prepared. In retirement, she found new pleasure in being active in the Church full-time. Even in retirement, Iris continued to stay in touch with her old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. Edna was active in her community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities offered to her.
Edna May "Iris" Smith passed away on October 8, 2008 at Belmont House after a courageous battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her husband Percival Terroade and her son Lloyd and daughter Leonie. She is survived by her children Gloria, Delroy, Pauline and Kenneth. Edna will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended relatives and friends. Services were held at Trull "North Toronto" Funeral Home on October 14, 2008 at 1pm. Edna was laid to rest in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
Simply stated, Edna was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Edna leaves behind a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Edna May "Iris" Smith (nee Terroade).
