Edward Joseph Hitchen of Scarborough passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 14. He began his career working for the East York Hydro and continued when the city amalgamated into the ‘Mega Mess’, as he called it, proudly working with a caring team for a total of 34 years.
He was well known in the community for his work with The West Scarborough Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Birchmount Baseball, Scarborough Rams Football, Wexford Hockey and the United Way, among others. His love of football began years ago when he was asked to try out for the Argonaut football team, a wonderful experience he never forgot.
‘Big Ed’ was universally loved and respected for his efforts, compassion and use of curse words. He is survived by Carol, his loving wife of 52 years. His two sons Joseph and James and daughters-in-law Svenia and Summer. In addition, Ed's innate 'goodness' survives through his four grandchildren, Connor, Maverick, Brady and Cooper.
Ed also has a loving extended family. Brother Allan and his wife Sue, sister-in-law Debbie and her husband Tim. Brothers-in-law Ed and Bob, and their wives Millie and Louise. Nieces Makenna, Tayler and Maddison, and nephews Allan, Quinn, Edwin and Dylan.
The family would like to thank both Toronto Grace and Toronto General hospitals for their compassionate care. A Viewing will be held at Jerrett Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Funeral Service to follow, on Thursday, August 26, at 1 p.m. Donations to the Toronto Grace Hospital are appreciated in lieu of flowers.
A livestream of the Funeral Service will be available to those who are not able to attend. A link will be posted closer to the Funeral Service date.
The Jerrett Scarborough team wishes to remind all guests to the Funeral Home that the wearing of masks is mandatory. All guests must sanitize their hands upon entry. Physical distancing is also mandatory. We thank you for your understanding as we maneuver through this difficult time together.
