Dear Carol and Family,

We recently learned of Ed's passing and we are deeply saddened by the news.  We have such wonderful memories of Ed from the Birchmount baseball days.  Ed was always there for the team and for each player.  He was always generous with words of encouragement and willing to offer guidance to everyone.  Ed was a wonderful person to know and he had a remarkable personality and laugh that we will never forget.

Just found out Ed passed away.  Such a shock!  So sorry, Carol, and family!  Ed phoned quite often just checking in.  Always interested in us and our family and always so proud of his family!  Thinking of all of you and will miss our chats with "Big Ed"!

I didn't know Mr. Hitchen but I knew his wife and sons. When the boys were late getting she would phone me or me her. My son Greg and Joe were and are very good friends. When he was at their home I knew he was safe. My deepest condolences to the family and sending prayers.


I had the great pleasure of knowing Ed, and the Hitchen family, through Birchmount Baseball. Ed was incredibly generous with his time and was always the team’s most dedicated supporter. His openness, generosity, and more than anything, his laugh, made him so easily approachable, even when I was a young player. He was an unforgettable character who made a great impact on me as a young person, He will be sadly missed. Our deepest condolences to the family.

We were very sad to hear of the passing of Ed.  We have great memories of him from Birchmount Baseball days.  He was a team guy.  Like any parent he would cheer for his own son but Ed always cheered for everyone and hope for the best for every member of the team.  In short he was a wonderful person and it was a pleasure knowing him.  Our deepest sympathies to the entire family. 
We are currently in a situation where we are avoiding indoor gatherings but will definitely tune into the live stream service on Thursday.

The Town of Scarborough has lost it's "KING", but he will always be in our hearts. I fell in Love with Ed Hitchen in March of 1976. As I watched my Mother being laid to rest, I broke down in Ed's arms. I felt comforted and safe for that moment. I never forgot it and never will, unless I get alzheimers. 
We would like to thank Ed for making our family celebrations most joyous over the years. His everyday comments about life and the world, was well advised and most entertaining.
The love he had for animals was next to none. When our Collie, Lacie Lou came into our lives, Ed would call her name and embrace her with a hug and a kiss. 
Our kids thought Ed was hilarious, by using very selective language to describe his love of politician and criminals.
Rest in Peace Big Ed "egg"! We'll miss you FOREVER!

My fondest memories of Ed Hitchen. I had the privilege of knowing . I wrestled both his sons  in his living room. When it was time for Ed and Carol to return home from a hard days work. Ed had to sternly tell us kids to stop wrestling in the living room. I always respected  the man. He was great to me. I loved to watch football and wrestling  at the Hitchens.  2nd  home for me. Love and respect to the whole family. Great man.

My brother Steve sent me the sad news of your passing.  This is the thank you note that I have wanted to send to you for 53 years.
Thank you for saving me from a really bad situation back in 1968.
I did not know you.
The summer of 68.  I was 17 & had arrived home very late from a party.  My mother greeted me at the door....livid.  I didn't think she should be, so I did the unthinkable .....I ran out of the house.
I was all dressed up.
I was shoeless
I was clueless
with no particular place to go.
I did not get very far when I was stopped by a police cruiser.  The officers called me over to the window & told me it was no hour of the night for a young lady to be wandering around the streets.  Instead of returning home, I proceeded to walk to Vic Pk and St. Clair, then north.  At 2 a.m., 1968, there was no traffic and it got darker the further north I walked.  In my distraught state, I did not realize two guys were walking behind me at a distance.  In no time they were directly behind me, so close I could feel them breathing & hear what they were planning.  
Not good. In a panic, I crossed Vic Pk to the west side, only to find myself walking toward the mushroom farm at Sunrise Ave. 
Bad move.  
All of a sudden, out of the darkness, a van slammed on its brakes and came to a screeching halt.  The two took off.  .  Ed, you yelled "Are those guys hassling you" ....aren't you Jim and Steve Hildebrand's sister...Hop in, I'll give you a ride home.  
Ed, you were a vision from heaven.  In the short drive back to  my house, whatever you said....you managed to calm me down.  You were like a big brother.  I hopped out of your van, & after what had transpired, facing my mother was going to be easy.  
I just turned 70 and I can't tell you how thankful I am to this day that you stopped.  You could have kept going but you didn't. You are a gentleman, a hero.  Your care & concern will never be forgotten.  I hope you are looking down & can see this.

The year was 1968. The year I joined East York Hydro.
The year I met Ed. Migrating from Guyana to Canada I knew no one at the time. Ed became my colleague at work and also my friend.
They say people come into your life for a reason and I am blessed to have had Ed in my life.
Being sports oriented Ed educated me about North American football,Floor hockey and Golf.
I took a liking to golf and based on how I played golf Ed reminded me that I was playing golf not cricket. We had fun playing golf.
I cherished the memories we shared throughout our working years at the Hydro.
After retirement we continued our friendship and we relived our working years via phone conversations. We were able to laugh at our past experiences.
On behalf of my family and I please accept our condolences.
May Ed’s soul Rest In Peace always.
He will be missed.

Remembering Ed Hitchen

We have many wonderful memories of Ed!
Brett’s earliest memory of Ed was at about 9 or 10 years of age.  Ed always treated him with warmth and always made him feel welcome, which to a young lad made you feel great.
Fast forward 11+ years and I meet Carol and Ed while dating Brett.  Again Ed had a way of always making you feel welcome.
When my oldest son Cody was 2 years old, he was in the hospital and they didn’t know what was wrong with him, other than he had some kind of blood disorder.  Ed phones Brett and tells him if Cody needs blood transfusions, that he and Joey and Jamie would be there to help in an instant.  Remembering this still brings us to tears.  
He was such a selfless man.  Although my sons, Cody and Jeremy weren’t blood to Ed, they always thought of him as one of their Uncles and were honoured to have him as their Uncle.
Ed was the type of man that would give you the shirt off his back, but he was also a man who didn’t mince words and told it like it was, which is refreshing in this day and age.
He will forever be in our hearts and the world has loss a very special and kind man.

My deepest condolences go out to my dear friend, Carol & her family, on the passing of ‘bigger than life’ Ed. Although I didn’t meet Ed in the flesh, I got a thoughtful, kind-hearted & funny glimpse of him through our common interest in the CFL whenever I phoned the house. I could tell that he was ALL HEART!! May Ed live on for ever in your fondest memories of him. 

We ALL loved, ‘Big Ed, 
who was totally great!
You could often find him on the phone,
checking in on his many mates.

Ed would always ask 
if you were ok.
“How are you? I love you?”
 He would always say!

My dad was a man among men
who most certainly was great.
One of his favouite pastimes
was to flatulate.

He had a gigantic heart
and a mighty laugh,
and worked for East York Hydro
where he loved all the staff.

He had a reputation
for being the strongest man.
He carried his family for the past 52 years, 
better than anyone can!

Ed loved to eat,
and Carol loves to cook.
A marriage made in heaven, 
It would often look.

Dad loved children and dogs. 
He was kind, fun loving and always enjoyed a good laugh, 
in fact the only person that he was ever mean to 
was the air duct cleaning staff!

My dad had a presence that was unmatched
as a youngman from the start.
when he entered a room, 
A sea of people would begin to part. 

It doesn’t feel appropriate to say my dad has passed,
died or is gone,
but rather fallen like a dynasty, leaving a mark, 
a legacey that is strong!

Ed was the best Dad
in the whole Universe,
However, sometimes Joe and Jamie
would inspire him to curse!

He was also a proud Grandpa, 
as his beard began to grey
“I love you Maverick, Connor, Brady and Cooper!,
Ed would always say!

Ed was LOVE and always will be,
We will all miss him for eternity!

We love you Ed and don’t worry we know you will always love us!

It is hard to think of something to say about Ed that anyone who knew him wouldn't already know.  We all knew that his heart was bigger than he was.  I often wondered how he found the time, even when still working, to help other people so much.  Our football days were great, especially for me. Can you imagine being a running back that gets to run behind Ed. You just sort walked behind him as the field cleared.  And yet after the play was whistled, he would help up anyone who was down, even opposing players, who by the way I overheard saying he was like a "Moving Wall."  Enough about football.  Ed would call and talk to my wife Susan and myself all the time, asking if we were ok and did we need help with anything, or ask us about something he needed to help someone else. One time I said yes, you might be able to help. My Grandson Zack had a badly injured leg and it looked like he might lose it or not be able to use it.  Whoa! Stand back!  I don't know how he did it exactly but help started almost right away. Argonaut's team doctor, and other doctors were soon looking at and treating Zack.  He walks today and even played football for a couple of years.  THANK YOU SO MUCH ED.
