She was life partner & wife to passed husband Seamie Joseph Egan, mother to Rita, Liam, James & Michael, with daughters-in- law Brenda (grandchildren Meaghan & Kyle), Dale (grandchildren Hanna married to Shawn Hastings with great grand children Alfred & Edward, Grace & fiancée Trevor, and her dearly passed grandson Callan), & Penny (grandchild Avari). We send condolences to her siblings & families of James Somers (passed), Paddy Somers (passed), Vera O’Shea (passed), Neil Somers & Rita O’Neill. Our thoughts go out to her friends across Canada & Ireland.
In her youth she helped with the family business lounge & shop, as bookkeeper, & her father who played fiddle was proud of her Irish dancing. Poppy & Ma, ventured 70 years ago by ship from their home in Callan Co.Kilkenny from the port of Cobh to start their family in Toronto, Canada.
The early days renting in Little Italy & saving for their forever home in Scarborough was not easy, but had support from her Irish friends, new immigrant families & neighbours also on the same journey. She stayed home to raise her children, volunteering with schools & activities, became known as Nanny to all. She lived life to the fullest, willing to join in any ventures with family or friends. Enjoyed theatre, concerts, family dinners, high teas & touring gardens. She never said no to seeing grandchildren’s games, recitals & competitions. Proud Irish-Canadian she travelled to every Canadian province & Yukon, cruising around the world with Poppy from Antarctica to Alaska, all Americas, Caribbean, Iceland, India, Russia & Europe, with many excited returns to Ireland to see dear family & friends.
She had the strongest most generous heart & soul, her door always open to all visiting. Mastered the iPad Skyping siblings often. Enjoyed daily mass & joining friends at Timmie’s after. She never wore black, choosing colours instead. What we all loved was her determination, resilience, that she loved her home, garden & family, treasured her friends, stood her ground, never shy in voicing her thoughts, to the joy of many. May she rest in peace with Poppy by her side again, we will miss her forever. God bless. Love & hugs always.
A private celebration will be held at Jerrett Funeral Home 660 Kennedy Rd Scarborough at 10am May 24th, followed by Mass at St. Maria Goretti 717 Kennedy Rd at 11:30am, reception back at Jerrett at noon, burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens 2700 Kingston Rd.
