Ethel was born in Barrie, Ontario. She died on August 28, 2013 at her home in the Houses of Providence in Toronto.
At 26, Ethel entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Loretoo and took her final vows. The order sent her to train as a teacher; teaching assignments included Detroit, Michigan and the Indian Mission, BC. In the 70s she was selected to accompany young people to World Youth Day events. In 1978, she withdrew from the order, regretfully leaving her companions of 26 years.
She completed a Master’s Degree in Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and co-wrote Three Decades for Literacy & Development with James Draper and colleagues.
Ethel was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Susanna (Sevigny) Hipkin; brothers Rev. William Hipkin and Joseph (Imelda Flannery) Hipkin; and sisters Norberta (Lew King) and Bernadette (Merill Skinner). She is remembered by 18 nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Anthony Werunga at St. Mary’s Church, Barrie Ontario, on Saturday October 5, 2013 at 12:00 noon.
After mass, burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery on the Sunnidale Rd.
