Born on July 23, 1936, to Elna and Robert Whiteside, Helen attended the University of Toronto's Victoria College where she studied under Professor Carl Atwood, father of noted Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Helen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1957, majoring in Botany and Entomology.

Helen was a passionate conservationist and member of the Toronto Field Naturalists (TFN). For many years, Aarne was the TFN's Treasurer, while Helen took on roles as President, newsletter editor, and co-author of numerous publications. In recognition of their contributions, the TFN named a wetland acquired in 2002 the "Helen and Aarne Juhola Reserve."
Both Helen and Aarne were longtime members of The Brodie Club, an organization named after Dr. William Brodie, one of Canada's most renowned naturalists. They also were involved with the Bruce Trail Association and The Nature Conservancy of Canada. Helen was an active supporter of the Ontario Historical Society and member of the Toronto Entomologists' Association.
Helen is survived by her nephew, Colin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aarne; her parents, Elna and Robert; her sister, Gail, and her beloved Uncle, Dr. Alen McCombie.
A celebration of life for Helen and Aarne will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home, 467 Sherbourne Street, Toronto.
