Passed away peacefully at the Credit Valley Hospital on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.
Irene, the granddaughter of Yip Sang, eldest daughter of Yip Kew Hong and Esther Chinn was born in the Wing Sang building in Vancouver, B.C. in 1923. She moved to Toronto with her husband, the late Timothy Kam Chow in the mid 1940’s. As proprietors of Knob Hill Cleaners in Scarborough until retiring in the late 1980’s, Mom and Dad were actively involved in their communities and growing family. They enjoyed socializing and travelling the world, they were avid ballroom and line dancers, and they really loved their family.
Mom was always the life of the party, she loved to knit and crochet for her family and the community. She especially enjoyed making hundreds of hats for cancer patients; she was given an award by the Cancer Society for her efforts.
Mom will be sadly missed by her children, Cynthia (Jim Fong), Michael Chow (Brenda), Ling Chow (Peter Skelton), her grandchildren, James (Jennifer), Steven (Petchie), Nicole and Allison; her great grandchildren Mina, Mercedes, Arya, Xavier and Calvin. In addition to her immediate family, Irene is survived by her sisters Eunice (Nelson), Audrey (Douglas), her sisters in law Winnie, Dorothy, and Jean Gow, and predeceased by her sister Connie, and brothers Roy, Fred, Peter, Donald, her sisters in law Kay and Pat and her grandson Brian.
Mom will be forever remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a true friend to all who knew her.
The family would like to thank Doctors Goodman and Besik and the caring staff in the Credit Valley Palliative care unit for their support, kindness, and loving care.
Friends may call at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street, (at Wellesley), on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A private service will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
