

DAINARD, J. Alan – Passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook hospital on Friday, December 19, 2014, with friends and family by his side. Born in Golden BC on May 26, 1930, he was the son of the late Courtland J. and Harriet A. (Sanborn) Dainard. Alan was also predeceased by his wife Norma (nee Zumello) of 45 years, and younger brothers Gary, George and Bill.
Alan obtained his Ph.D. in French literature from the University of Alberta in 1967. He taught at the University of Toronto from 1968-1996, and was a Professor Emeritus with the Department of French at the University of Toronto. Alan was a collaborator in the 5-volume edition of the correspondence of Helvétius from 1968-2004. For over 40 years Alan dedicated his life to his position as General Editor of the letters of Françoise de Graffigny. The 15th and final volume will be submitted to the Voltaire Foundation in Oxford in February 2015. He inspired affection, loyalty and respect in his collaborators. In 2005, in recognition of his dedication and contributions to French literature, Alan was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was an outstanding teacher, much liked and admired by his students at all levels. Alan loved classical music, the opera and was himself an accomplished pianist.
Alan will be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy, his Robarts 14th floor colleagues, and numerous cherished friends.
Friends may call at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street on Sunday, December 28th from 2-4 p.m., and 6-8 p.m. A complete service in the Coach House Chapel will be conducted on Monday, December 29th at 1 p.m. followed by cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
