I have very fond memories of Uncle Jim and am so sorry to hear of his passing.  My Mom, Eileen (Baker) Mailey, was always so pleased to see her little brother, when he came for visits to Winnipeg.  I have been working on some ancestry research and have a little story about their homestead years up in Ashern Manitoba, which includes uncle Jim's birth.  

In 1920 not long after Tom was back from the war, Adeline was pregnant.  With her sister Connie's help, she tried to prepare as best she could for this birth that was coming, out in the wilderness around Ashern Manitoba, with no hospital or doctor at hand.  They had a book called Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, which is still in the family to this day.  This book explained to every Victorian housewife, what to do about everything.  If you read this book today, there are still some very helpful and practical tips in it, but there is also some quite comical advise on other subjects, but it had what they were looking for.  
There were complete instructions on how to prepare the laying in room in preparation for this birth.  Washing down the entire room.  Oiling the floors, to keep the dust down.  Washing and sterilizing bedding and towels, by washing and drying them, then rolling them in individual packets of newspaper and baking them in the oven at 225 degrees for a certain length of time. All other items to be used were sterilized by washing then boiling, then baking in the oven in paper packets in the same way, right down to the small strips of cloth they made, which would be used to tie off the umbilical cord.  These paper packets would remain sealed and sterile until needed.  They were sure that they were well prepared, but just in case, they had heard of a local Indian woman that was used by all the folks around there as the local mid-wife.  She was contacted and assured them that, yes, she would be there when the time came.  
So, when Adeline's labour started, they laid everything out as instructed in the book, settled Addie into the bed and sent for the mid-wife.  A number of hours later the mid-wife arrived just in time for the actual birth.  She ignored all the items that they had so carefully prepared for her use and just grabbed one of the strips of cloth and stuck it down the chimney of a coal oil lamp until it was slightly browned and charred, but had not caught on fire and proceeded to tie the umbilical cord with that.  Smacked young Jim on the backside and told them he would be just fine and off she went.  I guess she had her own way of sterilizing things that she knew worked.  And that, according to my mom is how my Uncle Jim came into the world.

Dear, Bonnie, Deb and Dennis, I was so very sorry to hear the news of Jim's passing.  Jim and Dorothy were good friends and wonderful company for my late husband, Ernie, and me for many years.  My sincere sympathy to all of you and your families at such a difficult time.

So sorry to hear of Uncle Jim's passing. I didn't spend a lot of time with him but what time I did was always enjoyable.

When we think of the good people in our lives, we think of Jim Baker.
