Jan “Rocky” Verweel passed away on November 5, 2026, in his 80th year on his own terms after living with cancer. He faced the final year of his life with remarkable bravery and determination to continue doing the things that brought him joy and meaning.
Jan leaves behind his wife and life partner of 50 years, Heather; his beloved children, Joanna (Clark), Lee (Melissa) and Miles (Anna); and his cherished grandchildren, Jack, Grant, Wesley, Leo, Mila, Louisa and Greta.
Jan lived a full, active and varied life. Over the years, he was a musician, a teacher, a piano tuner, an avid gardener and an enthusiastic participant in many sports. He was also a true jack of all trades— always willing to learn, fix, create or help.
Music was one of the great loves of Jan’s life and remained a source of pleasure throughout his years. He was a talented and versatile musician, a singer who played several instruments and enjoyed composing and arranging music. His love of music brought him many wonderful friendships and memorable experiences.
Another of Jan’s lifelong passions was reading. He always had a book, newspaper, magazine or crossword by his side. His curiosity and love of learning stayed with him throughout his life. He was quick to recommend a book or article if he thought it might interest someone.
Above all, Jan was a deeply loved husband, father and grandfather. His warmth, humour and generous spirit enriched the lives of those around him. He brought music, laughter and kindness to those he loved and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.
At Jan’s request a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
