On June 21 at Sunnybrook Hospital, of respiratory failure, two days short of her 86th birthday, surrounded by loving family. Dearly beloved wife of George Gould. Proud mother of Anne Louise (Doug Sarjeant) and John (Sandy Mayzell). Delighted grandmother of Elizabeth and Jon Sarjeant, and step grandmother of Jonathan and Amanda-Lee Chesley. Sister of Diane Gee (the late Warren Gee), Robert Fulford (Geraldine Sherman) and the late Wayne Fulford (the late Patricia Duggan).
Joan Anne was born in Toronto on June 23, 1926 to Frances Fulford (later an E.S.L. teacher), and Albert Fulford, an editor at the Canadian Press. She studied at Victoria College (U of T) and the Ontario Institute of Education. On July 3, 1954, she married George Gould, who had served as a pilot with the R.C.A.F. in World War II and was to become an actuary at Manulife.
Joan Anne was a dedicated teacher of English and Phys Ed with the Scarborough and North York Boards of Education, and was active with the Blythwood Home and School. She was a long-time member of the University Women's Club of North York, serving as its president during a politically dynamic period of the Canadian Federation of University Women.
Joan Anne and George spent time every summer for more than 50 years in their beloved Muskoka, enjoying swims, canoe trips, visits to the Port Carling library and the company of their children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and extended families. Joan Anne was passionate about family and friends. She marveled aloud every day about her good fortune in life, literally counting her blessings. She loved to laugh, and (despite being advised to only mouth the words in the Malvern Glee Club) she loved to sing. Jo graciously hosted the family carol party for 37 years. She was a voracious reader, particularly of fiction and biography, and devoured the daily newspapers - she considered it a banner day when both her brother and her nephew wrote a column. She continued to read, to enjoy classic movies, and to cherish her family and friends right to the end.
A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday, June 26, at 1:00 p.m., at the TRULL “NORTH TORONTO” FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.). In lieu of flowers, if desired, the family welcomes donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation, or to a favourite charity. On line condolences may be made at www.trullfuneralsyonge.com.
