João Furtado

21 February, 19501 May, 2021

João Peixoto Furtado passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2021 at the age of 71 after a long, tenacious battle with cancer. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Joao managed his illness with strength and grace, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his family whom cared for him ‘til the very end.

Joao was born on February 21, 1950 in the small, rural village of Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel. As a boy growing up by the sea his love for adventure grew into a passion for fishing that he revisited throughout his lifespan.

After serving for his country with military deployment in Mozambique. Joao embarked on a new life’s journey and immigrated to Canada in 1974.

Joao and Gloria settled in Toronto where they raised their three children and together celebrated over 50 years of unity.

João leaves behind his beloved wife Gloria, his children John, Kevin, and Odilia, and his cherished grandchildren Leo, Noah, Scarlett, and Selene.

He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and remembered in all our hearts by his family and friends.

The Furtado family greatly appreciate your gestures of sympathy and condolences at this very difficult time.

Regrettably, due to current pandemic restrictions the visitation and funeral service will remain private for family only on May 4th, 2021 at 2pm.

Burial service to be held on May 5th, 2021 at Prospect Cemetery.

If desired, flowers may be delivered to Jerrett's Funeral Home or donations in memory of João may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Dearest Joao,
We've always known you primarily as our beloved Maria (Gloria's) husband! And as father to three truly exceptional individuals; John, Kevin and Odilia. This surely is your greatest achievement, and what you leave behind is alive and well in all of them, and now in yet another generation.
You will be missed but you may rest peacefully now, knowing they will continue to honour your memory and preserve your legacy in the years to come.
You rose to the terrible and unexpected challenge of your illness with dignity and a quiet strength of character we all admired. God Bless you on your journey, we will not forget you.

Hi daddy,

I ordered pepperoni pizza today in memory of you. I wish I could share a slice with you because I know you would love it. Fabio spoke about the day you walk up back stairs to thank him for the delicious chicken he made you. I remember thinking you were crazy because you made it up all those steep stairs and you could barely walk. You will be missed by Fabio and I.

Your son,
