Jose Antonio Blanco Fernandez

He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Oviedo and with a Business Diploma in Madrid. Having received a Fullbright Scholarship, he was able to study in the USA, where he earned a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), and a PhD in Chemical Engineering at Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York).

He started his career in Canada with Inco Ltd in 1968 as a research engineer in Port Colborne, Ontario and then moved on to manage three separate research stations. He was subsequently promoted to Assistant Manager of the Inco smelter in Sudbury, Ontario, and later to Manager. He ended his career at Inco as Vice President of Human Resources, Engineering and Administration of the Ontario Division in 1994. After retiring he began consulting and worked on projects with the World Bank, BHP and others.

Jose was always very involved in the life of his community, Sudbury. He served on the Board of Cambrian College (Chair), the SRDC (Sudbury Regional Development Corporation) (Chair), and the Chamber of Commerce to name a few. He was proud to have been appointed by the Honorable Diane Marleau, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, to chair the Board of the Royal Canadian Mint for a three-year term where he oversaw the construction of a new Winnipeg manufacturing facility on time and on budget.

His colleagues say that he had a brilliant mind, that he was a fount of knowledge and that he cared genuinely for people. He loved to teach, coach and mentor others and he wanted to make a difference in the life of others.

Jose met Huguette at Syracuse University. They were married in France in 1968 and have two children, Alba and Max, and son-in-law, Graeme.

Con gran tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento de José Antonio Blanco Fernández el 25 de diciembre de 2024 en Toronto, Canadá. Nació en El Condado, Laviana, Asturias, España en 1935.

Es Licenciado en Químicas por la Universidad de Oviedo y Diplomado en Empresas en Madrid. Tras recibir una beca Fullbright, pudo estudiar en Estados Unidos, donde obtuvo una maestría en Ingeniería Química en la Universidad Northwestern (Evanston, Illinois) y un doctorado en Ingeniería Química en la Universidad de Syracuse (Syracuse, Nueva York).

Comenzó su carrera en Canadá con Inco Ltd en 1968 como ingeniero de investigación en Port Colborne, Ontario y luego pasó a administrar tres estaciones de investigación independientes. Posteriormente fue ascendido a Subgerente de la fundición Inco en Sudbury, Ontario, y posteriormente a Gerente. Terminó su carrera en Inco como Vicepresidente de Recursos Humanos, Ingeniería y Administración de la División de Ontario en 1994. Después de jubilarse, comenzó a realizar consultoría y trabajó en proyectos con el Banco Mundial, BHP y otros.

José siempre estuvo muy involucrado en la vida de su comunidad, Sudbury. Formó parte de la Junta Directiva de Cambrian College (Presidente), de la SRDC (Corporación de Desarrollo Regional de Sudbury) (Presidente) y de la Cámara de Comercio, por nombrar algunos. Estaba orgulloso de haber sido designado por la Honorable Diane Marleau, Ministra de Obras Públicas y Servicios Gubernamentales, para presidir la Junta de la Royal Canadian Mint por un período de tres años, donde supervisó la construcción de una nueva planta de fabricación en Winnipeg a tiempo y en el presupuesto.

Sus colegas dicen que tenía una mente brillante, que era una fuente de conocimiento y que se preocupaba genuinamente por la gente. Le encantaba enseñar, entrenar y orientar a otros y quería marcar una diferencia en la vida de los demás.

José conoció a Huguette en la Universidad de Syracuse. Se casaron en Francia en 1968 y tienen dos hijos, Alba y Max, y un yerno, Graeme.
