Me and my papa (Fred) would always watch sponge bob together, even though it may sound silly, I loved those times. Also I'm Jason his grandson not his son.

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”

All the elements of that Nouwen quote would describe the friendship I was blessed to have with Fred. In the days when I was much younger and didn't have an advancing crown of glory on my balding head, Fred gave of himself to me. He listened, really heard me. He never sought to solve my problems, but challenged and encouraged me to find the answers within myself. Fred would always point me back to God. He would say that Christ was the answer to every need or problem.

Fred would even dare to be vulnerable, identifying with his own weaknesses, to give me hope that God had a plan for my life. He was open and honest about showing me all the warts and blemishes of his character. He would tell me if Christ could make such a transformation in his life, then there was hope for me, that with time my saviour would mature my own character.

Fred showed great strength of character in admitting the many times he had blown it in his life. He took me into his confidence. I was touched and humbled by this. Yes, the greatest Christian leaders are in touch and well acquainted with their own sinfulness, that they might understand and empathize with the struggles we all have with sin.

I was shocked like so many of you when I learned of Fred's death. That fellow with an infectious laugh had wormed his way into my heart. 

Fred leaves behind memories for all of us, who had the profound blessing of knowing him. To try and define what made Fred uniquely Fred would be impossible. It would be like trying to understand how a composer like Bach put together "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring." Even scholars who have studied his compositions each have their own thoughts on describing the beauty and message behind Bach's music.

We all have our own way of thinking about Fred. This is reflected in the so many touching memories you share of him. I confess I'm having a really hard time reading all your thoughts from the heart. Tears of sadness come. Yet, in that moment, I reflect on a more humorous memory that I hope helps in the healing of Eileen and her family,in Fred's family, and for all of us.

I ask Fred, reflecting on him being both a Salvation Army officer and Canadian Armed Forces chaplain, "Fred, do you ever get confused about what uniform to wear?" He went into uproarious laughter, then composed himself and said, "Yeh, I did that once."

That was Fred, the undefineable Fred. I will miss him sorely. We will all miss him.

Thanks, Fred , for being strong enough to be the friend, the mentor, and yes even being a clown for Christ much like Father Henri Nouwen. Your gentle and tender hands of Christ in you will always be remembered.

Eileen, we uphold you and your family and Fred's family before God's throne of grace. Know that we will be with you through your time of grieving of the husband, father, grandpa, colleague and friend, who walked with us all for God's season.

I would like to say thank you for the many prayers, well wishes and kind words that we have received throughout this difficult journey.  When I was asked by my wonderful “Momma 2” to get up and say a tribute for my Dad…..I thought, oh no what do I say, am I going to be able to do it?  How do I come up with something to say that describes what an amazing man he was, and how much he truly meant to me.  Well the truth is that I could speak endlessly and it wouldn't be enough, so I will just touch on a few things.  The first is something I wrote for my Dad once I had truly let my feelings take over while he was ill.
The news came in a rush, panic quickly set in.
You Dads in the hospital, it is near the end.
We've been blessed with a little more time,
But not enough in your daughters mind.
So many years have been lost,
All at such a high cost.
We've spent many years catching up for lost time,
Just a little longer, I wanted you to be mine.
I'm being brave & strong, just like you Daddy.
But the urge to break down is getting to me badly.
We only have a short time left together,
Then you'll be with Jason forever.
My Dad…….
We spent several years apart which we cannot get back.  But during that time apart he was on a different journey.  No one is a stranger to the struggles my Dad faced, because he is not ashamed of them.  It takes a strong man to face challenges head on and overcome them, which he did in spades.  Many others would have given up, but he not only conquered these challenges, he used that experience to help others.  Most people would say that “people don't change”.  I agree.  People don't change, but they are not always put on the path they are meant to travel either.  My dad was meant to do great things, but he went through a great deal to get there which only made him better for it.  That's the difference, some people simply accept the path they are given but he didn't.  So yes, people don't change, but the truly great people will not accept anything less than what they are meant to be.
My dad has healed many hearts, lifted up the chins of others, and taken the hand of those who did not have the strength to lead themselves.  He has listened, he has held & consoled people during trying times and helped those that were grieving.  He has given back to his community in spades, and he has given his family someone to look up to, and someone to which we can strive to be like.  He may have had to face struggles throughout his life, but I believe that this is part of what makes him so remarkable.  I am like my dad in many ways, and I can only hope to accomplish half of what he has in such a short time.  My dad was a man of few words, but the wonderful words that can be said about him are endless.

Janice mentioned that she was spending the week-end with you. she has been a great friend to you both. Thanks for thinking to let me know. I'm shocked and saddened as your message has prompted me to recall my journey with Fred. What a man of courage, determination and deep trust in God.

As you know, I journeyed closely with Fred during some of his toughest and darkest days. Fred's journey over these recent years has been one of amazing transformation empowered by God's amazing grace. I'm aware that Fred has had to face so many difficult things in life - any one of which would have been a huge challenge for most of us. Fred's life in and after his recovery journey has been quite inspirational for me personally, and as I write this, multiple images of a brave and courageous man, rediscovering his deep and compassionate heart come to mind. Mostly, I think of Fred walking forward with determination, because he knows Jesus is at his side.

I'm thanking God that I have had the privilege to know Fred in such a real way - head, heart and soul. I also thank God for the enriching gift of shared pilgrimage. What an encouragement to know that he is facing this next life challenge with such trust and inner peace.

Please pass this message onto Fred...and assure him, Eileen and their family of Robyn's and my love. They are all in our prayers today.

A Boy’s Hero
A tribute to my Dad

“My Dad is my hero.” This statement has always just about summed up how I feel for my Dad. Like all young boys I always sought out my father’s attention. And due to work commitments often my father would be away, but every time he came home he always made extra time for me and my brother. One time in particular comes to mind, my Dad had been away on a Military exercise, during which there was an accident with a tank and my dad ended up with broken ribs. My brother and I were quit young and didn’t realize he was in pain and jumped into his arms, he took the pain and never even let us know he was hurting. If you know me well you will know I am a man of very nerdy hobbies. These hobbies I mostly gained from time spent with my Father.  From sitting on Dad’s knee watching Star Trek and The Next Generation, to bringing me to the local comic book stores and telling me about how the comics were back when he would read them. My dad went out of his way when I was younger to make sure we shared interests and hobbies, so much so that in my teens, my biggest factor in joining Army Cadets was to spend time with my Dad. It built an unbreakable bond between us. He didn’t stop there either; my Dad has gone out of his way to try to be there for all of his grandchildren as well. Now that I am older I try to emulate how he was with me with my own children. Making time for them and sharing interest hoping they will one day hold me in the esteem I hold my Father. My Father has been a lot of things, a minister, a solider, a friend, a brother, a son, a husband, a father, and a role model, someone you can depend on, a listening ear, whatever he may have been to you. But to me my Dad has and always will be my hero!






 
I was so pleased to see you in the corner of my eye this morning in church.  So sorry I did not get a chance to greet you personally.  I identify with you having been in your shoes even though it was years ago.  You never forget the feeling, but I am reminded, as someone reminded me, that we are "blessed when we mourn"!  It is healthy and God has given mourning as a season in our lives.  Without mourning we cannot be healthy.  You have been so great to all of us.  We love you and applaud your courage and example ....Nancy

Padre Fred journeyed with us over a decade in our association with the 709 Communication Regiment then 32 Signal Regiment. We will miss his steady presence, his dedication to service, his kindness, his skill as a Padre, and especially his presence during our Remembrance services.

If I may speak personally, I will miss him as a colleague and a friend. I am especially sorry I was out of the country and unable to attend his funeral services! Please forgive the delay in offering our sympathies. I believe he served with distinction, with all his heart, serving God and country.

I had a wonderful time on Wednesday sharing with Fred your personal prayerful messages through emails and Facebook. Your notes brought many smiles on Fred's face. The doctors and medical team have Fred resting comfortably. Fred sleeps 85% of a day. We continue to be grateful for your continued prayerful support through this journey!

after a 6 week battle with cancer & my Dad's Fred Butler-Caughie passing on Aug.3rd, we laid him to rest yesterday after a beautiful service. The coming together of the Salvation Army & the Canadian Military made it truly remarkable. These two organizations are very dear to our hearts and meant a lot to my Dad, he would have been overwhelmed to see the kindness & generosity that we received by both.

It is with a very heavy heart that I must say good bye to a man whom I've respected and looked up to for many years; my Uncle Fred Butler-Caughie passed away earlier this evening (Aug 3) after a sudden and prolonged battle with cancer. I have been very honoured to not only have had him officiate my wedding but also to share my anniversary with him and my Aunt Eileen and most importantly to have him accept the role of Poppa for my children. I will forever carry his memory with me.

It has been a 6 week journey watching a Man I love struggle with the battle of Cancer. As hard as it was yesterday to hear that he had passed my heart was happy that he is no longer in pain. Eileen, we join with all who support you in prayer during this time of grief and loss. May the everlasting army sustain you through this time. Fred has left a great and worthy legacy and been such a blessing to countless people. We cherish our memories of times spent with both of you.

Fred was about the finest padre that I ever had the privelage of serving with.  the troops worshipped him while he was with the Regiment. It caused me to think back to Hamilton and your courtship as your relationship developed.  In a matter of days your life has been turned topsy turvy with the diagnosis of cancer. Eileen I wish I had something profound to say.  I want you to know you are loved.  Really understand that.  YOU are loved by your friends and your Heavenly Father.  This process is so very difficult for both of you.  In some ways it is more difficult for you.  Fred is on a pathway to meet his Lord.
