June 10, 1924 – January 6, 2019
Malcolm (Mac) Renaldo Sabiston passed peacefully at North York General Hospital in his 95th year on January 6th, 2019. Mac was predeceased by the love of his life, June (nee Marsden), who left him seven long years ago. Mac and June had three children: Judy Morgan, Mardy Hollingsworth, and John Sabiston (married to Vida Stripinis). Mac’s eight grandchildren were the centre of his (“Poppa’s”) life: Julia Morgan, David Morgan (married to Sally), and Jenna Giga (married to Farouk Giga); Amy Hollingsworth (partnered to Justin Grant) and Kerry Caleb (married to Eric Caleb); and Jeffrey Sabiston, Trevor Sabiston (married to Cailin Munroe), and Milda Sabiston (partnered to Matthew Osborne). Mac was also thrilled about the arrival of his first great-grandchild, Pip Morgan, and was looking forward to others.
Mac was born in Toronto on June 10, 1924, the eldest child of Ken and Von (nee McConnell). He was predeceased by siblings Colin Sabiston and Lois Howard. His studies at University of Toronto Engineering were interrupted by 2 years in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force where he flew in England until WWII ended. He had an accomplished career at Sangamo Electric/Schlumberger improving on the Watt Hour Meter and a weather research Radiosonde, and later led their production as plant General Manager, then Vice-President of Operations. After leaving Schlumberger he embarked on a second career with EEMAC (Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association of Canada), where he helped to modernize many of their standards. Mac was a pillar of his community and contributed great energy and time to numerous charitable and not-for-profit organizations, both in Don Mills and at the cottage on Washago Bay.
He enjoyed a long and joyful retirement filled with family, friends and his many hobbies, which included sailing, woodworking and genealogy. Among the legacies that he leaves behind are the cedar-strip canoe and kayak, which he hand-built with the help of his grandchildren, and his editions of “Our Cottage Life” which lovingly documented the history of the Washago Bay Community Club, creation of his and June’s beautiful summer home, and 80+ years of anecdotes shared with family and close friends.
The family plans to host a memorial service to celebrate and honour Mac’s life this summer at the family cottage on Lake Scugog – date and details to be announced. Please contact 905-815-9332 or send an email to [email protected] should you wish to attend. As an expression of sympathy, a donation in lieu of flowers may be made to the charity of your choosing.
Thank you for sharing your kind words and condolences. We find strength and comfort in the knowledge that Dad/Poppa/Mac touched so many people and that he will continue to live on in your hearts and memories.
