A life well lived would be an understatement. Our beloved Margaret “Auntie Marg” Marrison passed away peacefully on October 25 after over 101 years of touching lives wherever she went.
Born on September 15, 1921 in Toronto to adoring parents Wilfrid (Bill) Marrison and Mae Marrison, Margaret was an only child. Her parents felt she couldn’t be topped…and they were right! Together they enjoyed life to the fullest, travelled widely and, given their Irish roots, were known to throw a party every now and then.
Marg spent her entire working life at Bell Canada, retiring after over 30 years some 40 years ago. But she wasn’t finished. For the next 35 years, Margaret was a volunteer at Holland Bloorview, a rehabilitation hospital for kids and youth with disabilities. Margaret found her calling there and the kids were the joy of her life. Her face lit up when she talked about them. At her leaving, Margaret was the longest serving volunteer in Bloorview’s history.
Family was important to Margaret as well and throughout her life she remained very close to, not only her parents, but her aunts, uncles and cousins. In particular, her best friends growing up and throughout adulthood were her cousins Eleanor Currie (Thompson) and Isabelle Christenson (Thompson). They both predeceased her and she missed them dearly every day. The family takes solace in knowing they are all together again.
Margaret also leaves behind her cousins Murray Christenson, Paul Christenson and his children Neil and Erin, and Jane Yourkevich and her children Alana and Krista.
Marg will also be missed by her adopted family, her dear friend Launnie Garetson and her children Laura and Adam and Adams’s wife Niki and their children. Marg adored them all and never missed an invitation to celebrate a birthday or holiday with them.
True to form, and to her Irish roots, Margaret wanted to forsake a traditional funeral ceremony. Instead, there will be a wake in her honor on Tuesday November 8 from 5pm to 8pm at Uncle Betty’s Diner, 2590 Yonge St in Toronto. Come and raise a glass to celebrate this remarkable woman.
In lieu of flowers or other tokens of remembrance, Margaret asked that donations be made to Holland Bloorview Rehabilitation Hospital.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.giffenmackdanforth.com for the Marrison family.
