In his youth, Michael worked as a Globe and Mail newspaper carrier. On Saturdays, he would help his sisters complete their routes by moving bundles of newspapers along the way, a small but memorable example of the role he played in family life from an early age.
Michael was proud of his work in foreign exchange at BMO, where he built a career that he valued. He was also part of the very first Friends for Life Bike Rally, riding alongside his friend David Linton, the rally’s co-founder. This early connection to an event that would become so meaningful to many people remained an important part of his story.
Travel was one of Michael’s great passions. He ventured to many corners of the world, even travelling to Timbuktu, a reflection of his willingness to venture far beyond the familiar in search of new experiences.
In recent years, Michael travelled less. His struggles with alcohol took a great deal from him, limiting the life he had once known and his freedom to explore the world he loved. He continued to hope that one day he would resume his adventures. Sadly, Michael died suddenly of natural causes on October 17, 2026, before he had the opportunity to fulfil that wish.
He will be deeply missed by his parents, Fred Silk (Toronto) and Margaret Silk (Mississauga); his sisters, Alison (Shayne) and Jennifer (David); and his five nieces and nephews in Canada and Australia.
Michael’s life was one of journeys taken and journeys still imagined. Though his travels have come to an end, the memories of the places he visited, the experiences he shared, and the people whose lives he touched will remain.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to the Friends for Life Bike Rally, an organization that held a special place in his life.
A private service will be held with family
