It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Michela Nievas on January 7th, as she peacefully took her final breath surrounded by her loving family. Michela was born on February 3, 1942 in Villalba, Sicily. Michela leaves behind her beloved sons John and Massimo (Lori), and her cherished grandchildren: Lucas, Nicholas, Marrina, Matthew, Matthew William, and Lily. She will also be deeply missed by her brothers, Antonio (Franca) and Salvatore (Gigliola), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Michela was predeceased by her soulmate and husband, Juan Carlos Nievas, with whom she shared a life of love and devotion.
Michela was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, zia, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched everyone she met, from the neighbours on St. Clair Avenue to the caregivers who supported her in her final years.
Being the oldest of three children meant responsibility came early; she grew up nurturing others. In time, she came to embody a vibrant and colourful spirit, with a lifelong passion for singing and dancing.
In her early twenties, she, along with her family, moved to Genova to pursue better job opportunities. It was here that she met Carlo, and they married in 1965. The following year, Michela, along with her father immigrated to Canada to be reunited with relatives. Her mother, brothers and husband later followed her to start their new life together. They had two sons who enriched their lives. But life had a different path for her. She would later meet the love of her life, Juan in 1983, and they married the following year. Their marriage lasted 36 happy years and together they demonstrated their unconditional love for all their six grandchildren.
As a devoted daughter and wife, she took care of her mother in the latter part of her life, and dutifully took care of her husband when he was in palliative care. She was generous with her time and enjoyed the company of many friends and family.
She did various jobs, but her favourite was working in the office at Hudson’s Bay where she met some of her closest friends. Michela knew how to speak English, Italian and Spanish and was a charismatic and warm woman, making lasting friendships with many people she crossed paths with throughout her life.
Her legacy is one of compassion, generosity, and unwavering love for family and friends. Michela’s presence brought joy and comfort to all who knew her, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
