I remember Phyllis and Cousin Chris trying to embarrass Aunt Net while walking through the buildings at the Ag Fair at Exhibition Place. Instead of getting upset with them, she just laughed and let them be themselves. That's the kind of person our Aunt Netta was. Kind, honest, caring but most of all - happy. She treated all of us like her own and I'll never forget that.

You were the best mother in law! When I was pregnant with Katherine and it was slippery in the plaza where I worked during November, being due end December, you’d  meet me after work to support me across the ice so I wouldn’t fall. You lived for and loved your grand children and made it possible for me to work after the first (short) mat leave. You supported us when our first 2 babies were colicky— for months (!)—as well as did what you could when we had Nannies  part time (but they didn’t do much housework which caused you and me much irritation!). Despite the brain tumour you had when I was 1 month pregnant with Elizabeth, you recovered and began helping again with our busy household just a few months later. I could always count on you if I needed to drop off the children when I needed to do a home visit. When I think back I was more available to do the palliative care in peoples’ homes because of your support. 
Your brain tumour of 1991 was benign thank goodness; we laughed at your temper with the TV news for the few months after surgery until your temperament settled back to normal again; big Ed had quite the time of it!
 You got excited scoring “deals” from Sears warehouse  which clothed our family, and you smuggled donuts and pastries into our home which— didn’t always get eaten—- but the intention was kind.   You had immense patience with the grandchildren and less for big Ed and young Ed! 
You had immense gratitude to your son Mark for making it possible to stay in your own home for ever.  As we all do— he’s been amazing. We’re so thankful you were able to live in your home for all those decades and enjoy, and be enjoyed by, your neighbours. That was true contentment, which enriched the lives of us all: your 2 sons,  3  grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and the many nieces and nephews who valued you so much.  Rest in peace now, after 98 years: what an achievement.

We love you and will always miss you. Thanks for teaching the importance of movement between your walks, shopping trips, gardening and more. Thanks for taking me on lots of adventures when I was little, even the adventure of using the TTC public transit after your brain tumor removal prevented you from driving for a while, which we even used to get to Caribana because we loved the beautiful costumes. Thanks for the cottage, where we got to know your sister Carol, her husband, her kids, and their kids while we made memories swimming, jumping in leaves, boating and having campfires. Thank you for babysitting my daughter Amelia when she was a baby and toddler when I visited Toronto. Thank you for making shopping and finding deals into a fun sport. Thanks for encouraging me to live and have fun when I was young. I remember you gave me $300 when I went to Vegas as strictly gambling money, telling me to use that and only that $300 on gambling, which was advice I followed. Thank you for taking care of my little sisters. Thank you for showing us how to make friends anywhere with humour and small talk. I admire how you supported anyone you could by attending their wedding shower or baby shower with a gift, and how you babysat for a single mom who lived near you when she needed some help. I also admire how your diverse neighborhood knew and loved you for decades. I am forever proud of you for winning a gardening award for your neighborhood. I love how you did not always do what everyone else was doing before the 1950s, often making decisions that went against the grain. I am really happy you got to properly meet and spend time with all 6 of your great grandkids. Thanks for making turnovers with me from scratch when I was small, and for the dollhouses and the toys toys toys and cute kid clothes. I inherited your love of murder TV shows paired with potato chips. Thanks for giving us any advantage you could to try to set us up well in life. I am so grateful for the time we had.

I loved hosting you in Ottawa, when we went to Winterlude to see the ice sculptures. We also went to the War Museum where you taught me a lot and saw a lot of things you remembered vividly. You spoke to some veterans, remembering many of the same things from WW2. You came to my teacher PD day at the huge conference centre and everybody loved you and we had fun eating free spring rolls and sliders.

Seeing your nieces, nephews, neighbours and more come to your surprise 90th birthday party is one of my favourite memories. You are so warm and friendly that everyone we contacted was pumped to attend.

You always went above and beyond to make us feel at home. I think we all lived in your house at one point or another. People said your home looked like a grandma's house because of all the photos covering the walls, and you even have our degrees up. During high school many of my friends called you grandma because you always made them feel welcome and fed many of them too.

Thank you for coming to Ottawa when my Amelia was born. You made me laugh when you got so annoyed at antivaxxers because you remember things like polio. You made me feel better about using disposable diapers by saying that you had used cloth for your boys, since it was the only thing available at the time, and it had been awful. You made me laugh when you said screen time was awesome for kids because it kept them occupied and safe, and you wished you'd been able to sit your boys in front of a screen when they were little.

Thank you for loving your kids, grandkids and great grandkids unconditionally.

You were the best mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend ever. It was an honour to take care of you. I’ll think of you every day for the rest of my life. I’ll always love and miss you.

Grandma you will live on in my heart forever. You are the most special person I have ever known. You were kind, thoughtful, forgiving, and full of joy. You taught me to enjoy life and not be too serious. To laugh at the little things even if no one else was laughing. You were positive and driven. you showed me how to be loving and nurturing, but to hustle and succeed. I love you forever, I hope you are resting in peace and reunited with your siblings and parents.
