Nicola Bon

With his loving wife and daughter by his side, Nicola was called by God on Friday, December 23rd 2022, at the age of 85, after a courageous battle in hospital. Beloved and cherished husband to Marija Bon (née Mikicic) and loving father to David (Elisabeth Bon née Catalano), Cristina (Dimitri Pavlakos), Gianni (Joanne Bon née Mellace) and Deni (Lori Bon née Cocco), Nicola is survived by his loving grandchildren Luca, Daniel, Angelina, Nicholas, Michael and Emily.

Nicola was born in Beli, Croatia on Sunday, January 31, 1937, one of 8 children, to Domenico and Domenica Bon (née Bandera), and brother to Ivan, Domenico, Leonora, Maria, Romano, Guido and Fiorenzo. He arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax on Wednesday, May 16th, 1962, by way of Italy, having lived there for 5 years. He settled in Alberta, where he worked on a farm for several months until finally relocating to Toronto where he married Marija on Sunday, May 19, 1968. They were inseparable ever since, forming a true partnership based on mutual love and respect.

Nicola is remembered as a warm, kind, gentle, caring, compassionate, hard-working, selfless man, a wonderful husband and incredible father and nonno. He sacrificed for his family, toiling as a Bricklayer Labourer for over 30 years. He lived his life for his family, friends, with whom he derived his greatest pleasures through a laugh, a dance, a song, a race, una partita, giving a helping hand, and making (and drinking) vino.

Expressing his love until the very end, even when he couldn’t speak, he will be celebrated for profoundly touching the lives of those who knew him, his incredible strength, sacrifice and humble leadership for his family, and for being a truly Good Man.
