January 23, 1937 - July 7, 2025
Ortrud Buchholz (nee Grabowski), 88, of Toronto, Ontario, died July 7th, 2025. Ortrud, daughter of Maria and Gustav Grabowski, and loving wife of Oscar Buchholz for the past 65 years, passed away of natural causes on July 7th at Michael Garron Hospital, in East York, Toronto.
She is survived by her husband Oscar and son Michael. She is also survived by her only grandson, Oliver, living in Singapore. Oliver wants the world to know that “Oma” (German for grandmother) was the most amazing and caring woman who went out of her way to help all of those around her.
Ortrud was born in the town of Gründann, East Prussia, Germany. She came to Canada in 1958 where she met Oscar at Wasaga Beach in 1959, and they were married in 1960. Having graduated as a nurse in Germany, once in Toronto she needed to go back to school to get her Canadian nursing qualification. To achieve this, Ortrud studied and graduated from the Osler School of Nursing as an RN. Throughout her nursing career she worked at the former Queen Street Mental Health Center and West Park Hospital. Even in retirement she continued to serve, working as a volunteer at Casey House and helping those living with HIV.
Ortrud also loved food, gardening, hiking, knitting, Christmas, and exploring the shopping districts of Toronto with her friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in Ortrud’s honour at St Clair O’Connor Community (2701 St. Clair Ave E) on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 at 2pm.
