Renate was born on November 3, 1938, in Hornsmuehlen, Germany to Hermann and Martha Sick. Having been born just prior to wartime, Renate, along with her sisters Elfriede, Baerbel (Barbara) and Irmgard, experienced severe hardship and struggle to grow up and thrive in their homeland. Thankfully, the family’s collective resolve and determination allowed them to grow into brighter futures with each sister taking their own path. Renate began her accounting internship at MAK Manufacturing in Kiel, and later in Canada continued her services as a freelance bookkeeper for a variety of clients.
Renate married Guenter Friedrich Scholz in 1964, and several years later they emigrated to Canada in 1967 by boat to settle in Toronto. They eventually bought a house in Cabbagetown where Renate lived on the same street for 48 years. Renate was one of the original tenants of the Sumach by Chartwell Residence and lived there for over 6 years. Renate loved Cabbagetown and called it her home given that she resided there nearly two-thirds of her lifetime.
Renate enjoyed singing, experiencing cottage life at Kushog Lake, going to local casinos for entertainment and fun, and, most notably, loved her role and time with her grandchildren. Her positive spirit, determination, and courage to the end was a shining example to all who met her.
Sadly, Renate was in hospital and nursing home care for the last 15 months of her life and could not enjoy the sunset time in her life to the fullest. She was well cared for by her medical and nursing staff and was visited regularly by family. Renate knew well that she was deeply loved and always in our thoughts. Thankfully she was never in any pain but nevertheless is now at rest and in a better place.
Renate is survived by her only child Brian (with his wife Shannon), and her grandchildren Adrian and Claire. Renate was predeceased by her husband Guenter, and sisters Elfriede and Baerbel (Barbara).
A celebration of life with family and close friends will be held on Friday April 17th starting at 11:00am at Toronto Necropolis Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Renate’s memory may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Toronto Humane Society.
“The greatest celebration of life is a life well-lived.”
