Richard Joseph Zernentsch (known as “Ritchie” as a child and who used the last name “Zern” at times as an adult) was born on October 20, 1946, in Buffalo, New York, and passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario, two months shy of his 80th birthday.
Richard said that when his time came, he wanted to simply go to sleep and not wake up. Just as he wished, he passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18.
Richard was a true free spirit - unforgettable and larger than life in his younger years. His energy was limitless throughout almost every era of his life, living life passionately and to the fullest, in a way that was unmistakably his own.
He loved to laugh, make sarcastic jokes, shop, travel, dress (up) in style then go out and enjoy the night life. One of the Original Pride (Toronto) street marchers starting the gay pride movement in the early 1980s. His spirit and determination were inspiring to many, and he leaves behind memories that will endure amongst those who knew him.
Survived by his children, Mark and Sheri, his grandchildren Emma, Rachel and Lauren, and close friend and confidant Brad. He now joins his partner Guy (deceased 2023). We will miss them dearly. May they rest in peace.
A visitation will be held for family and close friends in honour of Richard's life.
