Sr. Doris Madeline MacDonell, OLM

Sister Doris MacDonell, OLM Died February 25, 2023 at Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto. Predeceased by parents Angus John and Isabel (MacDougall), brother Ewen, sisters Frances Petrunia, Helen White and Clare MacDonell. She will be greatly missed by nieces and nephews and her sisters in the Congregation of Our Lady’s Missionaries. Doris was born in Williamstown, Ontario where she attended school. After graduating from St Joseph’s School of Nursing in Cornwall she worked in hospitals in Cornwall and St. Catherines Ontario before entering Our Lady’s Missionaries in 1957. In Canada Doris worked at St Michael’s Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital as well St Elizabeth Visiting Nurses in Toronto. Her first mission outside of Canada was in Northeast Brazil where she served in health care for 14 years. After serving the congregation in Toronto as Director of Maryglen Residence for women, and in leadership roles as councillor, treasurer or Congregational Leader Doris went to New Amsterdam, Guyana, to minister in health care and pastoral ministry for 13 years. When the mission in Guyana ended Doris returned again to Toronto where the sisters benefited from her extensive nursing skills and her service in the OLM finance office and as the congregation’s archivist. In 2018 Doris moved with other members of Our Lady’s Missionaries to Presentation Manor Residence for seniors. Doris was dearly loved by her sisters in community. She was a reserved, faith-filled Scot from Glengarry, always conscientious and appreciated both for her dependability and her delightful sense of humour and quick wit. A Wake service will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday April 10th in the Presentation Manor chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am Tuesday April 11th in Presentation Manor chapel. Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 11th at 2:45 pm in Holy Cross Cemetery.
