It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Stefano Carella, on September 8, 2026, at the age of 94, in Toronto, Ontario, surrounded by his loving family. On this blessed day, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Stefano was embraced in our Heavenly Mother’s loving arms.
Born on November 16, 1931, in Acquaviva delle Fonti, Bari, Italy, Stefano came to Canada to marry the love of his life Carmela. Stefano devoted his life to his family and to the many people whose lives he touched with his warmth, generosity, and vibrant personality.
Stefano is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Carmela, whom he cherished dearly. Their love and the life they built together will forever remain a treasured part of his family’s memories.
Together, Stefano and Carmela made many sacrifices for their family. Stefano and Carmela would drive to Scarborough every morning to work at Telfer Packaging for over 30 years along with Carmela’s brother Luca (Laura) and extended family. Stefano also knew how to enjoy his life to the fullest. Spending precious time with family and friends, having Bitondo’s Pizza during Leaf games, Hamburgers on Fridays, espresso in the morning on College Street at il Gatto Nero, afternoon coffee at Quality Paint with Ralph and Rose, and shopping almost everywhere and coming home daily with bags full of groceries for his family.
He was a most cherished father to Anna, Rocco (Zulmira), and Dino (Kathy) and a much-loved Nonno to Matthew (Leanne), Philip (Mae), and Brittany (Cameron), and a cherished Bisnonno to his five great grandchildren. His family brought him great joy and the love and memories they shared will forever remain in their hearts.
Stefano was a happy, outgoing and loving man. He loved being surrounded by people and brought sunshine to those he loved and met. He enjoyed meeting family and friends for an espresso, sharing a good conversation, or simply spending quality time together. He had a natural gift for bringing joy to others and was happiest when surrounded by those he loved.
He had a particular passion for wine making and gardening, taking great pride and pleasure in both. He was the most loyal fan of his Toronto Sports teams which included the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Blues Jays and the Raptors. He was most passionate about soccer including Seria A and gli Azzurri. Whether tending to his garden with Carmela, making wine, watching sports, enjoying an espresso with friends, or gathering with family, Stefano embraced life to the fullest and the simple pleasures that brought people together.
Stefano persevered during his most challenging times after suffering a stroke with his strong will and determination. He overcame his obstacles and disabilities with accommodations and the strength of his family and God’s love. Despite his setback, Stefano continued to find joy in life and he lived his life fully, gracefully and with dignity in his home where he received affection and love.
Stefano is now reunited with his many beloved siblings who passed before him. He will be dearly missed by his brother Carmine (the late Laura) and by the family of his late brother Giuseppe (Maria) and his many nieces, nephews and cousins where he was born in Italy.
He will be loved, remembered and missed by Carmela’s siblings and their families: Luca (Laura), Raffaele (the late Rosa), and Giuseppe (Grace), as well as his dear Zia Vincenza (the late Nicola), Rocco and Maria Pasquale along with his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends and neighbours including Joe, Giuseppe and Antonio.
Stefano will also be loved and remembered by all of his personal support workers, including Lisa, Salvador and Anastasios, who provided dedicated and loving care for over 13 years, that brought him friendship, joy, dignity and invaluable special moments.
Stefano leaves behind a beautiful legacy of family, friendship, laughter, and cherished memories. His warm heart, outgoing spirit, and love of being surrounded by the people he cared for will never be forgotten.
Though he is deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing that Stefano is once again reunited with his beloved Carmela and the family members who went before him.
You will be our guiding light and Sunshine and will be forever cherished and loved. May he rest in eternal peace.
