Mrs. Thuan, Trinh Thi Truong was born in Da Le village, near Hue, Viet Nam. According to the Lunar calendar, her birthday was on the 13th of July in the year of the Dragon (Mau Thin) which corresponds to August 27th, 1928 in Gregorian calendar. However, due to circumstances at the time, her birth certificate was issued later and put January 1st, 1929 as her official birthday.
Mrs. Thuan, as she is addressed in Viet Nam, is the eldest among eight siblings in a scholarly family; her father was the Principal of the village school with modest income and a good upkeep of high moral standard.
When she was 17 years old, she became a teacher in the national literary campaign, teaching Vietnamese language to economically disadvantaged groups. In 1952, at 24 years of age, she was promoted to a permanent position to teach at the Elementary School of Upper Da Le, then moved to An Cuu Elementary School, and later assigned to Ly Thuong Kiet Elementary School in Hue where she remained until 1972.
In 1951, She married Mr. Dung Van Le, Manager of the Bo De Secondary School in the Citadel District of Hue. They have seven children, four boys and
three girls. The couple both worked in the field of education, their family became the symbolic teacher’s family in the ancient Imperial City of Hue.
In 1972, she was transferred to Sai Gon, then the capital city of South Viet Nam, and taught at Phan Dinh Phung Elementary School until her retirement
at the age of 57. In her forty years of teaching, she educated and cultivated many generations of successful professionals who often kept in touch and shared fond memories of their beloved gentle teacher.
In 1979, her husband passed away. His sudden departure dealt a severe emotional setback and imposed additional hardship on the family finance which was deteriorating in the backdrop of deep economic recession in Viet Nam at the time. She summoned her courage, managed to maintain the family with
success.
She migrated to Canada in 1990 under her eldest son’s sponsorship and remained there most of the time until she passed away.
Her entire life is an exemplary story of generosity and love, love for parents and siblings; love and care for her children; love and respect for her mother-in-law. In 1992, when her mother-in-law fell ill and became bed-ridden, she returned to Viet Nam to personally nurse her mother-in-law for several years.
During her life, Mrs. Truong actively participated in social programs, volunteered in charity organizations such as The Buddhist Family Association.
She passed away in Toronto, Canada, on August 26, 2014 in the loving embrace of seven children, children in-law, grand-children, and great grand-
children.
