I was very sad to learn about her passing.  Last time we spoke she was so happy to see the ocean and whales from your home.  I wrote the following to the Vankleek Hill and District Nature Society members.

I met Valerie Harrison back in 1996 when I joined our Society.  She was very involved in all sorts of activities, and I was surprised to learn that the only position she didn’t hold was that of Treasurer.  She was President from 1985-87 and from 1998-99.  She served as Secretary (1995), Newsletter editor (1999), Education Director, Property Custodian (1992-93) and Director for numerous years.  

One position she held for 11 years (1986-96) was that of Bird Compiler where she planned outings to Voyageur Park, the Alfred Sewage Lagoons and organized teams for the friendly competition of the Bill Pilon Memorial Spring Bird Count.  She also organized the Vankleek Hill Christmas Bird Count where her bird identification skills were valuable in establishing the validity of observations which were sent to the Audubon Database.
Her knowledge of birds was valuable as well when she participated as an atlasser in Ontario’s second Breeding Bird Atlas (2001-5).
Valerie served on the Alfred Bog Committee and like Léo Durocher, she was very committed in saving the Bog.
And in light of our motto, “Conservation through Education”,  I learnt that she spearheaded the creation of the Junior Wildlife Club at Pleasant Corners Public School after watching a gruesome television show, detailing the slaughter of whales.  Her son and his friend who also watched the show, and wishing to protect wildlife, asked her to be a resource person for the club.  

Valerie received the VKHDNS Lifetime Membership Recognition in 2007.

Mike and I (Carin) were so sad to hear of Val's passing. It is sad we lost touch over the . years but really glad you had chance to enjoy the ocean whales and other activities that Val enjoyed.

Those of us with the Vankleek Hill Nature Society were saddened by your loss. We have great memories of generosity, hospitality and additions of information with the focus of the Alfred Bog and other activities.
The late Valerie would like to have seen the return of a pair of nesting Osprey  by the bridge in Hawkesbury despite some disruption. We know that you were familiar with many Eagles in N B.

We send our condolences to the family.
Valerie (dr) used to open her beautiful home in VanKleek hill Ontario to my daughter and I and teach us to knit. We used to sit together and share stories, knitting and occassionally a little glass of wine. We had a great time and I still have all the master pieces that we created together. Val used to make the most beautiful art, be it knitting or mosaics or stain glass. She helped my daughter tap into her creative side and has continued to explore this wonderful art side of herself because of  Dr Valerie.
She was  a powerful and wonderful force., in her work or her off time. the world is less without her in it. I feel blessed to have shared some of mine with her.
