With profound sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of William
Murray Mair on February 25th, 2020 in his 66th year. Murray, as he was
known, was born on September 13th, 1954 in Aberdeen, Scotland to
William and Christina Mair and spent part of his childhood there
before the family immigrated to Canada in 1956. After graduating from
Malvern Collegiate in the Beach, Murray went on to work for Brewers
Retail (The Beer Store) until his retirement. Prior to his retirement,
he could be found at his cottage on Ril Lake in Muskoka during
vacations and weekends. After taking early retirement he spend much
time there enjoying the peace the lake afforded away from the hustle
and bustle of Toronto. Murray enjoyed BBQing and was particularly fond
of a good homemade burger followed by his favourite Kawartha Dairy ice
cream, Moose Tracks. The cottage housed an impressive collection of
books and DVDs, many of which nodded to his Scottish heritage. He was
known for playing his collection of rock music – his collection of CDs
was varied, he also enjoyed sharing the Scottish Rebus series with his
father. A die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan, a room at the cottage was
dedicated to his team with various memorabilia collected over the
years displayed proudly. Despite having no children of his own Murray
shared his love of the lake and Muskoka with his nieces, ensuring they
had their own pint sized Muskoka chairs, whittling appropriate
marshmallow sticks and honouring their additions to cottage décor
including homemade sun catchers and various drawings. His pride was
evident as they grew when he religiously sported the University
sweatshirts gifted to him at family gatherings for birthdays and
holidays. These meals were a highlight for Murray as he often
applauded his sister at the end of a meal. Not a man of many words
nor one for technology, he passed on tidbits of amusing comics or news
via mail and ensured birthdays and holidays were met by the arrival of
a card.
