Husband. Father. Grandfather. Friend.
Teacher. Mentor. Coach.
Born June 21, 1944, Bill was a lifelong resident of Toronto. He passed away August 26, 2026, at the age of 82.
Bill leaves behind his wife Judy, son Scott (Lisa), daughter Laura and grandchildren Emma, Charlotte, Angus, Jack, and George.
After graduating from Western University and Ontario College of Teachers, Bill began teaching and coaching Track & Field at W.A. Porter Secondary School, later joining Birchmount Collegiate where he continued his 32-year career. The track at Birchmount Stadium was named in his honour in 2021.
Bill served on the board of Athletics Ontario for 12 years, including five as President and initiated the Awards Banquet which continues today. He also coached with Phoenix Athletics and served as Vice-President for many years. He was gifted at spotting potential and coaching in all track events, from sprints to distance, but many people regarded him as probably the best 800-metre coach in the country during his time.
Bill’s athletes experienced phenomenal success under his tutelage. Several went on to become OFSAA (provincial) champions, NCAA scholarship recipients, national team members, and Olympic medallists! More importantly, Bill’s influence led his athletes to become even better people. In spite of high standards and telling it like it was, most of his athletes liked and respected him greatly. Many remained friends for decades.
