Edwin Hirotoshi Sugimoto

On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Edwin Hirotoshi Sugimoto, a beloved husband, father of four children, grandfather of five grand-children and great grandfather of one great grand-daughter, passed away peacefully at the age of 86.

Ed was born on February 28, 1936 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Masatoshi Masaji Sugimoto and Kikue Shigeyo (Tanaka). Ed attended Ewa Elementary, Ewa Intermediate and Mid Pacific Institute (MPI) High School in Hawaii and graduated in 1954. He entered and served in the army from 1958-1964 and spent some time in Korea. Ed moved to Los Angeles, California and graduated from Northrop Aeronautical school in Inglewood, California. He met and married Shizue/Sue (Yamashita) September 19, 1964 and raised four children, Richard, Carole and twins Traci and Mark and lived in Carson, California for over 50 years. Ed worked at Continental Airlines as a mechanic for many years and then worked for McDonnell Douglas/Boeing as a Technical writer until he retired in 2000.

Ed was very active and ran track and played baseball in high school. He continued with sports for many years with his favorites being basketball, softball, golf, bowling and fishing. Other things he loved to do was go to Las Vegas to gamble, eat good food and desserts and meet up with his friends. He never missed his grandkids track meets, dance performances, birthdays and special occasion celebrations and was an avid Dodger and Raider fan. He was known for calm demeanor, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.

Ed was preceded in death by his father, Masatoshi, and his mother, Kikue and his brother, Paul. He is survived by his wife Shizue/Sue, his four children Richard/Rich (Lisa), Carole (Darin), Traci (Eric) and Mark, his grand-children Ryen (Freychell), Tamryn, Stephen, Brianne and Alexis/Alex, his great grand-daughter, Rylee, and his sisters Mildred/Millie and Ida (Edwin).

We will miss him dearly and will forever carry our fond memories in our hearts.

A private immediate family only viewing was held on January 17, 2023.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Lighthouse Memorials and Receptions, McMillan and McCormick Center at 1016 W. 164th St., Gardena, California 90247 at 10:00am with lunch reception immediately following from 11:00am-2:00pm.

Interment will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl), Hawaii in July 2023.
