March 9, 1925-December 28, 2009
Beloved family man and long time Manhattan Beach resident, Herb Harry passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009.
Herb went peacefully and is now reunited with his soul mate, Barbara.
Herb was born and raised in the Hermosa/Manhattan Beach communities and a graduate of Redondo Union High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara.
At age 18, his L.A. County Lifeguard duties helped lead him to enlist in the Navy during World War II. There he served, proudly, as a torpedo man aboard the USS Mugford protecting aircraft carriers in the South Pacific seas and swimming to rescue downed pilots, getting them back to the Mugford.
Upon returning home, Herb completed his studies and graduated from University of Southern California with a business degree. Herb had a very successful career with the Union Oil Company, of which he retired from in November 1999. He was a member of the Wildcats and sat on the board of directors for Cal State Dominguez Hills, as well as the SoCal Board of Realtors. He continued to stay active with associates who will also feel his absence.
Herb and his wife, Barbara were married for 59 years before she passed away in November 2003. Herb is survived by his four children: Robin Randall (spouse, Scott), Kim Verry (spouse, Steve), Skip Harry (spouse, Karen), and Mike Harry (spouse, Sue), twelve grandchildren: Darci, Staci, Michele, Kelli, Dani, Kyle, Jake, Kadie, Mara, Nick, Matt, and Hope, and eleven great-grandchildren: Brent, Makenzie, Regan, Tyler, Desi, Skylar, Joe, Aly, Daniel, Kelcee, and Kurtis. He will be greatly missed by all.
A private burial at sea will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 with a " Celebration of Life" open house beginning at noon. The celebration will be held at 429-8th Place, Manhattan Beach. In lieu of flowers, the Harry family asks that you make a donation in Herb's name to the RM Pyles Boys Camp.
Herb, our "Ole Sea-Dog" will continue to "fight on" in our hearts and memories!
