

where he lived until his marriage to Ann in 1944. Soon after, they moved to the
big city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There he learned the bakery trade. Each of his
three daughters was born in a different city in Wisconsin. In 1957, the family moved
to California to the Hawthorne area where Marlowe worked at the Upjohn Corporation
compounding plastics. He went back to school at forty and graduated from the
California College of Mortuary Science in 1966. He served his apprenticeship at
Vega-Robison Mortuary in Montebello. He relocated to McMillan Mortuary in Gardena
where he worked for thirty years as manager until his first attempt at retirement in 2000.
In retirement, he was recruited to work again in East Los Angeles at the
Latino-Americano Mortuary where he worked part-time until December 2011.
As a funeral director, Marlowe attended several management courses at the
National Funeral Foundation in Evanston, Illinois. He took a personal interest in helping
the people who needed his services. His friendliness and deep concern for the families
he helped made him many lasting friendships.
Marlowe served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher of teenage boys at
Faith Tabernacle in Los Angeles for many years.
Marlowe was active since 1974 in the Gardena chapter of the Rotary Club,
serving two terms as president. At his retirement, he was honored with a
Lifetime Achievement Award by his fellow Rotarians.
Marlowe passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the
Harbor City Kaiser Hospital. He is survived by his wife Ann Debban,
his daughters Barbara Kadan-Ochoa (Jesse Ochoa),
Carla Debban-Waffer (Daws Waffer), Yvonne Fields and grandchildren
Kristin Mehaffey (Alan Mehaffey), and Derek Kadan.
