Sonia Marina Torres was born May 31, 1939 in Coamo, Puerto Rico to Marina (Cartagena) and Isidoro Mateo. She lived with her family of thirteen brothers and sisters until she migrated to The Bronx, NY. It was here that she met and fell in love with her loving husband, Juan. It all started with one movie date and then she and Juan were inseparable. You could always find them dancing together, sharing a laugh, or in a loving embrace.
Sonia and Juan were married in 1956, and made a loving home with their strong sons: Juan, Angel, Ricardo and Jose. They lived in The Bronx until 1980, when they decided to move out to Torrance, California for a new start. Years later they moved to Long Beach, where they enjoyed walking through the area together.
Sonia worked in a nursing home when she came to live in Torrance. She always enjoyed working with patients and finding ways to make everyone smile. Every day was a day to be celebrated in Sonia’s way.
Sonia's most treasured possessions were her five granddaughters Samantha, Jacquelyn, Alyssa, Rebecca, and Makayla, as well as her grandson Marc Anthony and her great-grandson, Xander. She enjoyed all the moments of laughter and love the most when surrounded by her family, especially family dinners. She greatly enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with her loved ones.
Sonia was never one to complain about anything, even in her most difficult or painful times. She lived her life with so much joy and such positivity. She touched many people throughout her time here on Earth; she was loved by friends and family until the very end. She will never be forgotten and we will always keep her memory alive in our hearts.
