Sr. Cecilia Louise Moore

Sister Cecilia Louise Moore, CSJ died on April 5, 2004, after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on April 17, 1928, Sister Cecilia Louise was the youngest of Rupert and Louise Wilcox Moore's seven children. She is survived by her sister, Clementine Moore Hale, and by eight nieces, five nephews, three grand nieces, and six grand nephews.

Sister Cecilia Louise was a resident of Los Angeles for sixty-four years during which time she attended local elementary schools and, after graduation from St. Mary's Academy in 1945, entered the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She was a member of the Congregation for fifty-eight years.

Having received her BS degree from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles and her Ph.D. in chemistry from St. Louis University, Sister joined the faculty of Mount St. Mary's College teaching and also serving as Dean of Residence and, later, as Dean of Faculty. She became president of the College in 1967.

At the completion of her term as college president, Sister became Associate Superintendent of Secondary Schools and Colleges for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. She served as president of the Western Catholic Educational Association from 1980 to 1987 and as president of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) from 1985 to 1986. Sister traveled nationally and internationally as an educational consultant.

Sister also served on the boards of numerous educational and health care foundations and held leadership positions in her religious community.

Much more can be said of Sister Cecilia Louise's achievements, but a listing of them all, while attesting to her administrative and leadership skills, does not reveal the person she was. The outpouring of sorrow at her death and the tributes paid to her life, in a small way, indicate the singularly gifted and beloved woman she was.

A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, at Carondelet Center, 11999 Chalon Road, Los Angeles. Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, April 17, at 11:00 a.m. also at Carondelet Center. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
