
Warren Powers Ross, AKA "Ross," was an International Man of Mystery, a Maverick Nomad, and an American Hero of our Greatest Generation. Ross was born July 6, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA, to Clare and Warren Ross. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 19 and served with the Marines on Guadal Canal. After being wounded and evacuated to New Zealand, he returned to the U.S. and trained as a Naval aviator. He served as a fighter pilot on Okinawa until the end of World War II, and was released from active duty in 1946. Ross was a pilot and a flight instructor in all parts of the world: Japan, China, Laos, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, Angola, and Nigeria, as well as in Florida and California. He described his job as an inter-island pilot in Hawaii as "the most fun job I have ever had." He was a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, and a member of the Florida Bar Association for 50 years. He has been a resident of Torrance, CA, for the past ten years. Ross was known for his endless knowledge of history and geography, and his countless stories of stirring up trouble while navigating the globe. Ross' insatiable wanderlust has taken him from this world onto bigger adventures. He is survived by his sister, Rita Byer, his wife, Adrianne Ross, his niece, Jaimie Mock and family, and his nephews, James and Kurt Gierlich. A service is being held on Sunday, May 30, at 2:00pm, Rice Mortuary in Torrance.
