Born March 17, 1918, in Boston, Massachusetts to Raymond and Alice (Killian) Smith. Beloved husband of 68 years of Edith (d'Entremont) Smith. Father of William of Palos Verdes, Kevin and Jean of San Francisco, Gary and Laura Lee of Newport Beach, and Victoria of Culver City. Proud graduate of Boston Public Latin School in 1935. Received a BBA degree in Accounting from Northeastern University in 1950 (rated in the top 10% of graduates). Received an MBA in Accounting from Stanford University in 1958. Bill served as a navigator in the US Air Force for 26 years, retiring in 1969 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Proud recipient of the Forbes Gold Medal in 1962, given by the California Society of Certified Public Accountants for the highest scores in the state on the CPA examination. Bill's second career involved teaching accounting at several universities including 26 years at the University of Southern California. Received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1969, from San Diego State University, and the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence from the University of Southern California, School of Accounting in 1994. Bill was beloved by 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Bill leaves a sister Barbara (James) Byrne, of Harvard, Massachusetts, and one brother, Paul (Marylou) of Osterville, Massachusetts. Numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services at St John Fisher Church, 10am, Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Interment private. Please no flowers.
