

Anthony Leo Garvin, 86, passed away suddenly Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Munson Medical Center.He was born on the family farm January 10, 1924 in Cedar to Felix and Pauline (Narloch) Garvin. He married Theresa Schettek on October 27, 1951, it was the first wedding ceremony performed at St. Rita’s Church in Maple City. Tony was a loving husband to his wife, Theresa, for 58 years and wonderful father to his children David (Cheryl) Garvin, Traverse City, Mary Socha, Traverse City, Margaret (Steve) Snider, Naperville, IL and Lawrence (Fiancée’ Cherry Winowiecki) Maple City. Proud and loving grandfather to Kim (Sean) Byrd, Key West, Fl, Christopher (Alysha) Garvin, Oxford, MA, Brent Garvin, Chicago, IL and Jodi Garvin, Westmont, IL. He is also survived by brothers: Roman (Mary), Alex (Jean), Stanley (Proxie) and sisters Josephine (John), Boczar, Betty (Edgar) Newell, Maxine (Ben) Taylor, and Frances Mills (Jerry).He was predeceased by his parents, infant daughter, Catherine, son-in-law, Paul Socha, sister and brother-in-law Matilda and Leonard Pleva, sister-in-law Ruth Garvin and sisters Agnes(3) and Marie (5). Tony proudly served his country in the Army from 1949-1950 and the Army Reserves until 1955 when he was honorably discharged, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He retired from Cone Drive Gear in 1986, after 22 years of service, working at Concrete Service in the years prior to Cone Drive. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion and St. Rita’s Parish. He and Theresa attended St. Francis after St. Rita’s was closed. He enjoyed farming/gardening and was looking forward to mowing the lawn this coming spring.Friends and family may call at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where a vigil will be held at 7:30. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday, February 4, at 11:00 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the spring at St. Rita’s Cemetery in Maple City.In remembrance of Tony, memorials may be directed to Knights of Columbus, 13424 W. Bayshore Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684 or the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.
