Stephen (Steve) James Loney passed away on Oct. 23, 2020 at his Traverse City home. Born in Royal Oak Michigan on Sept. 23, 1953. He was a beloved son of Alexander and Mary Louise (Rothmeyer) Loney. A wonderful brother to Neil (Pat) Loney, Mary (Bill) Loney Taylor, John Loney (deceased), Joseph (Filo) Loney, and Paul (Rowshan) Loney. Special uncle to Beth, Alex, Mandy, Matthew, Roderick, Benjamin, and Pauline and good friend to many. He attended Shrine Schools, Royal Oak, graduated from North Huron High School, Kinde, MI, and went on to get his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University, then masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University and University of Michigan. He retired from the UM Hospital, administrator of Anesthesiology Department after nearly 40 years of service. His hobbies were woodworking, sailing, cycling, reading and running. He completed over 100 marathons and was a member of the 50 states marathon club. Steve was a strong believer in community service, serving on the Board of the Directors of Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County and the Huron Dunes Subdivision. He was also a very generous benefactor of many nonprofit organizations, identifying closely with the plight of the underprivileged.
Steve will be remembered for his unconditional devotion to his family and friends. Steve's siblings, nephews and nieces and friends were always the source of tremendous joy and the sharp focus of his love.
Visitation will be Wednesday Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home,
Traverse City. Mass on Thursday at 8 am at the Holy Childhood parish in Harbor Springs. If you wish to offer condolences, they can be shared at Covell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings can be made to Maryknoll Lay Missionaries or the Food Pantry at Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County.
