

Eva Howard Traylor, 99, died on August 11 in Alpharetta, GA. She was a long-time resident of the Toco Hills/Emory area of Atlanta. She was born on January 16, 1925, in Derma, MS, to H.G. and Ethel Howard, the 6th of 10 children. She is survived by her sister Edna Herring of Memphis, brother Stanton Howard of Derma (Dee), and sister-in-law Elizabeth VanCurler (Jerry) of Kulm, ND. Her husband, Herbert Wallace Traylor, died in 1997 after 52 years of a happy marriage. They met during WWII while she was in college, and he was in the Army stationed in Mississippi. They lived and worked in Columbia, SC, and Chicago, IL, while he completed his education, then settled and raised their family in Atlanta.
Eva was a wonderful mother to three children: Tom Traylor (Milton) of San Francisco, CA; Susan T. Cooley (Phil) of Salisbury, NC, and Jim Traylor (Barbara) of Canton, GA. She was a loving grandmother to Jamie Traylor (Heather), Carol Hickey (Matt), Liz Roddy (Shannon), Diane Boren (Scott), Matthew Traylor (Ashton,) and Rebecca Jones (Bill). She had 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She devoted much of her time and energy to her family. She also maintained close relationships with her siblings. She was especially close to her sister, Frances (and family), who lived in the Atlanta area and was married to Herbert’s brother. Frances died in October 2023.
Eva was an active member of Peachtree Baptist Church since 1950. She taught Sunday School for over 40 years; she was active in WMU, Vacation Bible School, the ministry to International Students, and many other church activities. She also volunteered for many years at Stewart Baptist Neighborhood Center and DeKalb General Hospital. She was a member of the LaVista Lions Club Auxiliary, the LaVista Women’s Club, and the Merry Hills Garden Club. She lived on Christmas Lane for 64 years and loved her many neighbors.
Eva was very involved and supportive of all the activities of her children and grandchildren. She set a wonderful example for them of a life well lived. She lived out her Christian faith by loving, serving, and caring for others, and she touched many lives in her 99 years.
The funeral service will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3150 Lawrenceville Hwy, Tucker, GA, on Thursday, August 15, at 2:00 p.m.. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours before the service and a reception to follow after the burial.
