Joan was born on October 4th, 1934, in Quincy, Illinois, to Richard and Virginia Whitney. She graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, with a cum laude degree in accounting. She met her husband, Dick, while in college.
Joan was a sweet, loving mother and wife, raising children and running the household, all while throwing herself into numerous charitable ventures. She is one of three lifetime board members at the High Museum of Art, to which she was passionately dedicated. Joan sat on the Board at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School, and was a Eucharistic Minister at the church. Joan was also involved in several charities promoting literacy, including the FERST Readers Foundation, and a campaign with rural libraries to get books into the hands of underprivileged children.
Joan was the first accountant for her husband’s company, and was still involved in accounting for related ventures later in her life. She was a world traveler, visiting most of Europe, and an avid golfer.
She was the voice of reason and a port in the storm for any number of people during times of crisis, never seeming ruffled during dark times.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Dick, her children David, Elizabeth, and Richard, her daughters in law, Janice, Melissa, and Maggie, her sisters Ruth, and Martha, grandchildren Brendan, Kelly, Taylor, Grace, Adam, and Eli, and great grandchildren Emma Kate, Audrey, Stella, and Maddux.
Joan will be horribly missed by all who she touched during her life.
