Johnetta Leola Parkinson, a pillar of strength and kindness, a beloved mother and homemaker, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2024 at the age of 87 in Emory Hospital, Atlanta Georgia. She was born on February 4, 1937 in Johnsonville, Liberia, unto the union of Mary Jane Rice-Slocum & Johnny Robert Richardson Sr. Johnetta attended St. Theresa’s Convent, and married her late husband, Hylton Richard Parkinson Sr., on July 26, 1959.
In 1974, she and her 4 younger children left Liberia to join her late husband who worked with the United Nations (WHO) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The family lived in Nepal from 1974-1976 before transferring to Dhaka, Bangladesh. After about 6 years, 1976-1982, in Bangladesh, she and her family were transferred to Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1982-1983, still with WHO. Later her husband joined UNICEF and was stationed in Hargeisa, Somalia, from 1983-1985. From Somalia, they transferred to Zinder, Niger from 1985-1987, after which her husband took an early retirement and returned home to Liberia. Their planned retirement was interrupted when her husband was appointed to head the SOS Kinderdorf International Village as the Village Director/Father and she was the Village Mother. A few years later, the Liberian civil war broke out and they were forced to leave Liberia with just the clothes on their back to join their children in the United States. She and her husband arrived in the US on her birthday, February 4, 1991.
Johnetta was a woman of unwavering faith and compassion. She shared that with her church family, as a devoted member of Tabernacle International Church in Lawrenceville, GA. She was also deeply devoted to her family and community. She extended that love with her friends at the Cottage Adult Daycare Services in Snellville, GA. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Hylton Richard Parkinson Sr., and a loving mother to her children. She dedicated her life to caring for her family, creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Johnetta was preceded in death by her husband, Hylton Richard Parkinson Sr.; her 2 daughters – Aletha & Laurie; her son Hylton Jr.; her 5 brothers – Milton, Johnny, Carney, Samuel & Shadrack; and 7 sisters – Lou, Beatrice, Luvenia, Gertrude, Marie, Luetta & Clara. She will be fondly remembered by her 3 surviving sisters – Wilhemina, Joyce & Esther; her brothers-in-law – Tyjan & George; her 4 surviving children – Jerome, Elvira, Maisie & Alvin; her 19 grandchildren – Portia, Michael, Mengie, Michelle, Jerome III (Jakie), Richard (Rick), Kaiton, Jae, Raylene, Erik, Selena, Hunter, Mustapha Jr., Musuanni, Alvriette, Alvin Jr., Ravyn, Shaynah & Sasha; her 27 great-grandchildren – Jeffrey, Elizabeth, Taye, Delaney, King, Khaleesi, Amier, Nevaeh, Ayva, Elijah, Jordan, Jaylen, Janiah, Faith, Kamryn, Jeremiah (Almighty), Treven, Gabriel, Joshua, Dallas, Isaiah, Jonathan, Alyssa, Ethan, Terry, Xavier & Roenn; and her 3 great-great-grandchildren – Kayden, Kylie & Leo.
