

Clyde Gurley, Jr., longtime resident of Douglas, died May 8, 2012 in Tucson, AZ. He was born February 15, 1925 in Dyersburg, TN. Clyde enjoyed a long productive life that had humble beginnings on a Tennessee farm. He was among the few to train in the last troop of the US Mounted Cavalry. He had a tour in India in WW II, and then proudly served in the US Border Patrol from 1954 to 1961 in Florida. He and his family moved to Douglas in 1962 where he worked at the Port of Entry as an Immigration Officer until retirement in 1961. Clyde also raised Appaloosa horses on his ranch outside of town, as well as managed several rental properties in Douglas, including the Oasis and Parkview Apartments. he was happily married to his wife, Lucille, for 52 years. After her passing he took time to write a book about his life, which is now treasured by his family that remains. Clyde enjoyed visits with his family, traveling when he could, caring for his pets, going to yard sales, and visiting with the local Border Patrol agents in town. He will be remembered for his strength of character, his spirit of love and generosity, his faith in God, his shining example of fatherhood, and his devotion as a husband. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends he has had through the years.
