

David was born to Bernard Wolpert and Helen Sands Wolpert in Jamestown NY on January 9, 1946 and grew up in upstate NY. He attended Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, where he was on the baseball team and where he developed his lifelong love of baseball. He graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in English in 1967 and after serving in North Carolina with Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) he went on to earn a masters degree in social work from Columbia University in 1977.
David joined the Air Force as a commissioned officer in 1978. As a social worker in the armed forces, he was stationed in Mississippi, New York, California, Pennsylvania, Maryland and England before his final post at the Pentagon. David was a lifelong learner and earned a doctorate in social work from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. After retiring from the military in 1998 he continued his career as a civilian social worker with the Department of Defense in Northern VA for many years.
In 2019, David and Martha moved to The Academy Village in Tucson, AZ where they enjoyed the beauty of the Sonoran desert with their cats Thumbelina & Gelsomina. David participated in the community life of Academy Village and golfed, rooted for the NY Mets and continued reading every Booker Prize-winning novel.
David will be remembered as an intelligent, kind, gentle and humble man who will be missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Rosenstein Wolpert; his children Dana Wolpert Cain, Jessica Wolpert & Leo Wolpert; his grandchildren Brittani Hoffman & Arthur Cain III; and, his great grandchildren Londynn, Layla & Liam Hoffman.
Lt. Col Wolpert's funeral service took place at the Arizona State Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Marana AZ on May 21, 2024.
